Long: Addressing the Maryland budget deficit
Currently, in the Maryland Government there is a 761-million-dollar deficit. By 2026, the state will have a deficit of over $3 billion. This is unacceptable and must be addressed. This is more concerning considering that Governor Hogan left Governor Moore with a surplus. I guess we should start calling him Governor Spend Moore. We cannot afford to fully fund Kirwan. Education is important but there is a lot of waste...

Long: Development at Fort Howard Veterans Hospital should be reconsidered
Last Thursday there was a meeting at Dundalk High School about the rezoning of the abandoned Fort Howard Veterans Hospital. There is a proposal to rezone the area for residential housing development for approximately 500 homes. Currently the area has issues with traffic, overcrowded schools, and mail service. This will increase these problems and will also have environmental impacts. Currently, the problems with congestion are affecting our everyday life. Daily commutes will increase. Mail services have been facing challenges with the closure of the Fort...
Long: Still time to appeal Tax Assessments
About 100,000 Tax Assessment Notices were not mailed on time. Some of these delayed notices were in our district. I have heard from several constituents that their tax assessment notices were delayed. Another problem we are seeing is soaring property values. I recently hosted a townhall to talk about the tax assessment appeal process. I want to note that if you received your assessment notice late, you still have time to appeal your property’s new value. Now is the time to appeal if you think the assessed value is too high. Your tax bill in July will be based off...

Baltimore County continues midge control on Back River
This spring and summer, Baltimore County and the Maryland Department of Agriculture are once again spraying a harmless bacteria over the Back River area to kill midges and other nuisance bugs. “We remain committed to ensuring those who visit, live and work along Baltimore County’s waterways are able to enjoy our amazing outdoor activities, and are encouraged by the positive results from midge treatments both on Back River and inside the Wastewater Treatment Plant,” said Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski. “I am grateful for the...

Letter to the Editor: Pump the Brakes on Green Energy
I believe most Americans want to preserve our environment and are willing to make a reasonable sacrifice to do so. The current national policy, that of moving at warp speed toward green energy and renewable sources of energy will, in my opinion, move the United States from a respected super-power to a whimpering national begging for the energy crumbs of other emerging nations. In the past three years we have...

Anti-war protests, rises in antisemitism magnify challenges for free speech on college campuses
The war in Gaza after Hamas’ Oct. 7 attacks inside Israel has birthed contentious protests on college campuses magnifying debates around free speech and how universities should handle ramped up and controversial rhetoric — including antisemitism. The debate can pitt students’ and staff’s free speech rights — especially at public universities — against safety and harassment concerns voiced by other students and employees. “I think we forget that there is...
