The fall season is officially here , which means a few more weeks until most of us 'fall back' and gain an hour of sleep.

The time change happens twice a year, and while some may think farmers were the driving force behind the concept of changing time — that's actually not true, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac.

In 1915, the Germans were the first to officially adopt the light-extending system to save fuel during World War I, then the United States followed three years later when Congress passed the Standard Time Act.

More than a century later, the time changes still occur in most of the country, leading to legislative debate and several failed and stalled bills filed to keep daylight saving time permanent.

Still, many Americans will find themselves moving the clock one hour earlier in just a few weeks.

Here's everything to know about when we 'fall back.'

When is time change fall 2024

Daylight saving time will end at 2 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 3.

When was the first day of fall?

The first day of fall is Sunday, Sept. 22, marked by the autumnal equinox. According to the National Weather Service, the exact time is 6:44 a.m. MT/ 7:44 a.m. CDT.

Does every state observe daylight saving time?

Not all states and U.S. territories participate in daylight saving time.

Hawaii and most of Arizona do not observe daylight saving time. Because of its desert climate, Arizona doesn't follow daylight saving time (with the exception of the Navajo Nation).

There are also five other U.S. territories that do not participate:

    • American Samoa
    • Guam
    • Northern Mariana Islands
    • Puerto Rico
    • U.S. Virgin Islands

When will the sun rise after 'falling back?"

The Old Farmer's Almanac has a sunrise and sunset calculator on its website . Simply type in your zip code and future date.
