The Durham Bulls Athletic Park is one of four locations announced as a host site for Major League Baseball’s Home Run Derby X 2024.

MLB describes the expo as an exciting twist on the classic MLB Home Run Derby. Fans of home runs, crazy catches and exciting action will have their fill with the event, as it brings a lot for baseball fans to enjoy.

    WHAT IS HRDX?

HRDX is a three-on-three competition, offense versus defense, first introduced in 2022 that takes place globally and has been played in locations such as Seoul, South Korea; Mexico City, Mexico; Hartford, Connecticut; Fredericksburg, Virginia; and London.

The action will visit four minor-league stadiums in this year’s tour:

    • Aug. 10 — Parkview Field, Fort Wayne, Indiana, home of the High-A Fort Wayne TinCaps (Padres).

    • Aug. 23 — Isotopes Park, Albuquerque, New Mexico, home of the Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes (Rockies).

    • Aug. 31 — First Horizon Park, Nashville, Tennessee, home of the Triple-A Nashville Sounds (Brewers).

    • Sept. 7 — Durham Bulls Athletic Park, Durham, home of the Triple-A Durham Bulls (Rays).

In the HRDX, teams compete in groups of three, with each team featuring a former Major League star, a women’s baseball or softball player and a yet-to-be-named local ballplayer.

With more to be announced, confirmed participating players thus far are Jocelyn Alo, Jake Arrieta, Ian Desmond, Dexter Fowler, Jonny Gomes, Paige Halstead, Alex Hugo, Tiare Jennings, Andruw Jones, Ashton Lansdell, Amanda Lorenz and Nick Swisher.

“After participating in Home Run Derby X last year, I can’t wait to get back on the stage and hit some bombs for the fans in these four great baseball cities,” Swisher said. “The energy and excitement at both events last year was amazing, and I was so excited to hear MLB is adding additional stops this year. The fans are going to love it!”

    HOW IT WORKS

The three-on-three competition works differently than a traditional home run derby, featuring an offensive and defensive team.

Each batter will have 2 ½ minutes to nail as many home runs as possible. Each home run equals one point. Homers can earn extra points as well. If the center-field target is hit, the batter earns a bonus point, and if the batter calls for a “hot streak,” the points earned on his or her next five swings are doubled.

The defense earns points as well, receiving one for each catch or robbed home run, and during the batters’ “hot streak,” the defense earns the double-point bonus as well.

Each batter also gets a timeout and can tag in a teammate to help finish the at-bat.

The team with the most points wins.

HRDX Durham will be played at 7 p.m. Sept. 7 atDurham Bulls Athletic Park. Tickets range from $10 to $25 plus fees and are available at Ticketmaster.com .
