The Wilson County Sheriff’s Office says it’s investigating a murder-suicide in Sharpsburg that involved four gunshot victims, including a 6-year-old girl.

One woman was killed and another woman, a man and the child were shot. Authorities say the alleged shooter took his own life.

None of the victims had been identified Sunday afternoon.

Wilson County deputies and officers with the Sharpsburg Police Department were called to 141 Weaver Circle around 5 a.m. Sunday after receiving a report of gunshots involving several victims, according to a release from sheriff’s office Chief of Staff Wanda Samuel.

“When law enforcement arrived on scene, they located a male victim lying on the ground with a gunshot wound,” Samuel said. “Detectives also located a female victim who was suffering from a gunshot wound.”

Samuel said both victims were taken to ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville and were in surgery Sunday afternoon.

“(The) Wilson County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division learned that the suspect in this case was Daquan Marcato Jones, 32, of 1301 Leggett Road in Rocky Mount,” Samuel said. “Detectives learned that Jones fled the scene and dropped off a 6-year-old victim, who was suffering from a gunshot wound, at a residence inside of Nash County.”

“A plan of action was put in place to apprehend Jones,” Samuel said.

The Nash County Sheriff’s Office activated its special response team. The Wilson County Sheriff’s Office special response team was placed on standby.

Sgt. Macie Hasty, public information officer with the Nash County Sheriff’s Office, said deputies assisted the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office in locating the shooting suspect on the 6300 block of Jamie Road.

Deputies found the suspect’s vehicle in the driveway of a home.

“Units then approached the suspect vehicle and located a deceased female in the back seat of the vehicle,” Hasty said. “As units were approaching the residence, they heard a gunshot come from inside of the residence.”

Hasty said sheriff’s office units surrounded the home.

“A male subject then exited the side door to the residence and advised us that the suspect had shot himself,” Hasty said. “The male subject that exited the residence was detained. Units then made the decision to enter the residence and began clearing the residence. Units located the suspect deceased in the front bedroom of the residence. The male suspect was suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.”

Samuel said the 6-year-old was initially taken to UNC Health Nash General Hospital and transferred to ECU Health Medical Center for surgery.

Samuel said investigators are trying to determine what, if any, relationship the shooter and victims may have had.

“This is an ongoing, active investigation,” Samuel said.

According to the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction, Jones was convicted of assault on a female and common-law false imprisonment on Sept. 3, 2019, stemming from an October 2018 case in Nash County. Jones received a suspended sentence on the two misdemeanor convictions.

We read to many stories of domestic violence and when they are released from jail they commit acts of violence. The victim should be able to hold the justice system accountable and responsible.
