SPRING HOPE — A Red Oak Middle School student was found in the woods near his home in the Walnut Court subdivision hours after being suspended from school Wednesday.

Spring Hope Police Chief Nathan Gant said the boy was removed from class earlier in the day for a disciplinary action, then taken home by the school’s resource officer.

Upon his return, the boy abruptly left home, staying gone for roughly an hour — at which point the child’s mother filed a missing person report.

Spring Hope authorities anchored the search that followed, with assistance from the Nash County Sheriff’s Office, Nashville Police Department and the N.C. State Highway Patrol.

Deputies used a drone to spot the youngster, who was secured by a Highway Patrol trooper less than a mile from his house.

“I took custody of him from the trooper and transported him back to his mother,” Gant said of the resolution. “He was released out of the state missing persons system.”
