    Ladybirds win Big East golf match

    WAKE FOREST — Junior Audrey Jones sparked her Southern Nash team to victory in a 2-A/3-A Big East Conference match Wednesday at Brevofield Golf Links. Jones fired a career-low 45 over nine holes to win the individual tournament by four strokes while guiding the Ladybirds to the team victory with 148 shots.

    Other counting scores for Southern Nash were Sarah Ewers with 51 and Bryleigh Colbert with 52. Also in action for the Ladybirds were Adison Bailey (53), Alaina Bailey (54), Jenna Antil (56), Grace Jordan (56) and Makayla Weeks (58).

    Southern Nash will play Monday at Peachtree Hills Country Club in Spring Hope.

    SN turns back RR in key Big East clash

    ROANOKE RAPIDS — In the melee that is the 2-A/3-A Big East Conference volleyball picture, Southern Nash took positive steps with a four-set victory Tuesday at Roanoke Rapids.

    The 3-A Ladybirds kept pace atop the Big East with 3-A Franklinton and 2-A Bunn at 6-2 while improving to 13-2 overall. The 2-A Yellow Jackets slipped to 4-4 in league matches and 9-4 overall. Southern Nash will host Bunn next Tuesday, Oct. 1.

    Southern Nash spotted the first set 25-18 to Roanoke Rapids before winning the next three 25-18, 25-20, 25-16.

    Senior Carlee Beckham pounded 15 kills to lead the Ladybirds, while Hailey Glover and Peyton Cooke each recorded eight kills. Ava Pate and Savanna Baines had six kills apiece. Abigail Marks distributed 40 assists to go with four kills.

    Firebirds torch Gryphons 10-1

    ROCKY MOUNT — Victor Vargas scored four goals and Erick Arroyo had four assists as their Southern Nash High varsity boys soccer team stayed perfect through three 2-A/3-A Big East Conference matches with a 10-1 whipping of host Rocky Mount on Monday.

    Yair Candela also scored two goals for the 3-A Firebirds, who rose to 9-0-2 overall while remaining deadlocked with Franklinton for first place in the Big East. Mario Arredondo, Jeferson Barahona and Daniel Landa each netted a goal while Luis Farias had two assists in 15 minutes of action. Carlos Gonzalez III and Michael Gonzalez each had an assist.

    Goalkeeper Alex Benitez made five stops in the match for Southern Nash.

    The Firebirds, who are ranked No. 2 among NCHSAA 3-A East Region teams by MaxPreps.com , will host Northern Nash on Wednesday.

    Southern Nash takes 2nd at The River

    BUNN — A tightly bunched group for Southern Nash helped the 3-A Ladybirds to a second-place finish Monday in the second 2-A/3-A Big East Conference match this season.

    Adison Bailey carded a 55 at The River Golf Course to set the pace while Sarah Ewers, Bryleigh Colbert and Jenna Antil all came in at 56. Makayla Weeks fired a 57 and Alaina Bailey shot 59.

    Southern Nash posted a team score of 167 that only Nash Central was able to top with a 158.

    The Big East will play at Brevofield Golf Links in Wake Forest on Oct. 2.

    Yellow Jackets deny Ladybirds 5-4

    ROANOKE RAPIDS — Southern Nash came up short in a 2-A/3-A Big East Conference girls tennis match Monday at Roanoke Rapids, falling 5-4 to the 2-A Yellow Jackets.

    The 3-A Ladybirds, who improved to 3-7 overall, dipped to 2-6 in Big East matches after their second loss to Roanoke Rapids (8-2, 7-2 Big East), which won 7-2 at Southern Nash on Aug. 22.

    Julissa Maldonado prevailed at No. 1 singles for the Ladybirds while Taryn Reams and Hayden Baker each won their matches at Nos. 5 and 6, respectively. Baker teamed with Lauren Maldonado to win at No. 3 doubles.
