ROCKY MOUNT — A Nash County Sheriff’s Office deputy was celebrated on Thursday for bravery in the line of duty.

Sgt. Miguel Salazar was granted a “Hometown Heroes” honor for his actions on May 23, when he encountered a burglary suspect on Big Woods Road near Spring Hope.

Authorities say the suspect, Juan Salazar, charged Sgt. Salazar with a knife. The deputy then fired a single round, wounding Juan Salazar.

Following the confrontation, Sgt. Salazar conducted lifesaving measures until a Nash County EMS unit arrived on-site; the suspect survived.

“If law enforcement doesn’t stop these threats from people breaking into your home, there’s nobody else coming,” Nash County Sheriff Keith Stone said in a press conference. “I just commend the actions of my deputy. His quick thinking and his training prevailed today, and he’s able to go home and be with his family.”

Other local personnel were also hailed during the ceremony, including members of the Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Office, the Rocky Mount Police Department, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the Rocky Mount Fire Department, Nash County EMS and the Tarboro Police Department.

The luncheon, held at Rocky Mount Mills, was sponsored by Davenport Autopark.
