    Brockton's Samuel Okunlola makes Colorado football debut

    When Colorado football made its season debut tonight against North Dakota State, coach Deion Sanders had a Massachusetts native on the field.

    Brockton's Samuel Okunlola , a sophomore defensive end, transferred to Boulder from the University of Pittsburgh. Okunlola was a three-star recruit coming out of Thayer Academy in Braintree, and 247 Sports ranked him as the No. 32 overall transfer in the offseason.

    Okunlola started at right defensive end for the Buffaloes , usually matched up against North Dakota State senior left tackle Grey Zabel (6-foot-6, 305 pounds). Okunlola, wearing No. 93, was in on a third-down run stop that forced the Bison to kick a field goal on the game's opening possession.

    Colorado is coming off a 4-8 record last season. The Buffaloes started 4-2 before dropping their final six games.

    Okunlola stands at 6-4 and 245 pounds. During his redshirt freshman season, he played in four games. Last season at Pitt as a redshirt freshman, Okunlola played in 11 games and started the final two games for the Panthers. He made 18 tackles in 2023, 9 solo and 9 assisted. He tallied 5 sacks and forced one fumble.

    Okunlola, 20, will celebrate his 21st birthday on Sept. 27. The Buffaloes will play at UCF the next day.

    Samuel Okunlola's recruiting ranking

    Okunlola was ranked a three-star prospect coming out of high school. ESPN (No. 6), 247 Sports (No. 5) and Rivals (No. 2) all had him ranked as one of the recruits in Massachusetts.

    Rivals ranked him the highest as the No. 23 edge rusher in the country, while ESPN had him at No. 71 and 247 Sports at No. 107.

    Samuel's brother, and former teammate at Thayer Academy, Samson Okunlola, was one the most sought-after recruits to come out of Massachusetts. Samson Okunlola was the first five-star recruit in Massachusetts history.

    Rivals listed Samson Okunlola as the No. 2 offensive tackle while ESPN had him at No. 3. He was the No. 16 overall player in the country by ESPN. As a true freshman at Miami last season, the 6-6, 300-pound offensive lineman played in three games. He redshirted and will begin his redshirt freshman season on Saturday when the Hurricanes play at Florida on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
