One flown after two-vehicle crash
On July 13 shortly before 9 p.m., two vehicles collided at the Yowaiski Mill Road and Bosse Drive intersection in Mechanicsville. According to the Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department, one motorist was injured and flown to a regional trauma center.
Serving during summer
The end of the school year does not mean a halt to training for Great Mills Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps. The four-peat Distinguished Unit is laying the foundation for future success by putting its top cadets through challenging courses to better their leadership skills. This summer Great Mills NJROTC sent three cadets to NJROTC Leadership Academy in Virginia, plus a graduate assistant returning as an aide; one cadet to NJROTC Sail Academy in Virginia; four cadets to Joint Cadet Leadership Course at Virginia Military Institute; four cadets to ALA Maryland Girls State at Salisbury University; two cadets to American Legion Boys State at McDaniel College; and three cadets to Cyber Camp at Gannon University. These training opportunities reflect the commitment of cadet leaders.
Cool jazz amid a hot summer day
Three crowd-pleasing performances highlighted the second day of the 24th annual Potomac Jazz and Seafood Festival. The fest's big outdoor event July 13 at Coltons Point featured headline Julian Vaughan, Marcus Mitchell and Joi Carter, plus Latric Carr. The event is the signature fundraiser of the Friends of St. Clement's Island and Piney Point museums. Additionally, jazz events were held in Leonardtown throughout the weekend.
Mechanicsville man convicted of murder of stepfather
A Mechanicsville man was found guilty of murder last week following a four-day trial. A St. Mary’s County jury convicted Marvin Orlando Johnson, 39, Mechanicsville of first-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a crime of violence for the premeditated shooting and killing of his stepfather on May 24, 2023. Leonardtown wastewater treatment facility hits five-month delay
Leonardtown Town Council announced Monday that the completion of the town’s wastewater treatment facility expansion has been delayed by more than five months. The town’s administrator, Laschelle McKay, updated the council during its July meeting on the wastewater treatment facility expansion, a project that officially began in 2022. Vehicle crashes in Ridge
A one-vehicle crash on Route 235 in Ridge Sunday morning resulted in serious injuries to a motorist. According the Ridge Volunteer Fire Department, the crash happened around 7:35 a.m. in the area of Bryans Lane. Great Mills man sentenced to life for fatal stabbing
A man was sentenced last week for the slaying of a 33-year-old St. Mary’s man that occurred two years ago. Cherron Montril Waul of Great Mills was given a sentence of life in prison for the first-degree murder of 33-year-old Jermell Delontae Jones of Lexington Park. Waul, 47, was convicted of first-degree murder by a jury following a three-day trial earlier this year. ...
Crash, fire reported in Hollywood
Shortly before 8 p.m. June 29, a two-vehicle crash reportedly occurred on Route 235 in Hollywood. According to the Hollywood Volunteer Fire Department, one of the vehicles caught on fire. No injuries were reported by the fire department as a result of the crash and fire. The incident remains under investigation.
