    Martin County softball rallies to victory

    Two runs in the third inning allowed Martin County softball to erase a 1-0 first-inning deficit, and the home team went on to edge Bartlett-Yancey 2-1 in the second round of the NCHSAA Class 2A state playoffs on Saturday (May 11) in Williamston.

    Payton Lane doubled and went 2-for-3 with a run scored for Martin County (23-2), the No. 4 seed. Martin was scheduled to play at home against No. 5 seed Washington (18-3) in the third round on Tuesday.

    Riley Cowan, Ty’Hiera Wooten and Izzy Williams (RBI) also had hits for Martin County.

    Lane was again solid on the mound, as she went all seven innings and allowed just three hits and one earned run with nine strikeouts and three walks over 112 pitches.

    BGC 5, Rosewood 3Bear Grass Charter School’s softball team advanced to the third round of the NCHSAA Class 1A state playoffs by eliminating Rosewood at home on Friday (May 10) in a second-round contest.

    The Bears, the No. 3 seed, improved to 20-5 overall and were scheduled to entertain No. 11 seed Roxboro Community (16-4) in the third round on Wednesday (May 15). The game was postponed due to Tuesday’s inclement weather.

    Rosewood finished its season 17-5 as the No. 14 seed.

    BASEBALL

    BGC 3, Falls Lake 2No. 1 seed Bear Grass Charter trailed 2-0 after four innings, but the Bears rallied with a run in the bottom of the fifth and tacked on two more in the sixth to secure a one-run triumph over the Firebirds on Saturday in the second round of the NCHSAA Class 1A playoffs.

    Bear Grass improved to 21-2 and is scheduled to host No. 25 Pamlico County (13-11) on Wednesday in the third round in a contest pushed back due to Tuesday’s inclement weather.

    North Lenoir 2, Martin 1Martin County’s baseball season came to an end with a loss to North Lenoir in 10 innings on Monday in the third round of the NCHSAA Class 2A state playoffs in LaGrange.

    The No. 3 seeded Hawks (21-4) scored a run in the second, while No. 11 seed Martin County (15-11) managed its run in the fifth. It stayed that way until the top of the 10th when North Lenoir broke through with what turned out to be the game-winning run.

    Martin County had advanced with wins over West Bladen (3-2) and South Granville (4-2) in the first two rounds. North Lenoir will oppose the winner of No. 7 Seaforth and No. 2 Whiteville in the next round.
