Like a shepherd, the Holy Spirit guides us

My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me John 10:4. Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives.

    - Galatians 5:25

The shepherds knew each one of their sheep. They knew just how each would react in certain situations. That meant they could watch out and care for each one.

They had a staff that both guided the sheep and ran off predators. The crook on the end could catch any sheep who wandered from the flock.

The shepherd led the sheep to still waters because sheep were frightened of fast running water. He led them to green pastures. When the pasture was cut low by the sheep, he moved them to a new pasture.

The way could be steep at times. The path could lead them along the edge of the mountain. It might lead them through dark and scary forests. But the sheep trusted the shepherd and stayed close to him, letting him lead the way.

When an area was too dangerous, he led them around it. The shepherd knew where they were going and the dangers along the way. He cared for his sheep and protected them.

The sheep knew their shepherd’s voice and would come when he called. They would not come to or follow any other. If they happened to mingle with another flock, the shepherd could call and they would come from among the other sheep and follow him.

Jesus is our good shepherd. He knows the way ahead and can lead us through any situation. There may be times when He delays us or takes us down a different path. We may not understand but we can trust that He knows what is best for us. He will never leave us to travel the path alone. He will always be there.

There are times when our Shepherd will close doors or open them so we go in the right direction. Sometimes He delays or stops our plans. There may be danger ahead or better plans than we have made. We may get impatient or upset when things don’t go as planned unless we trust our Shepherd.

The most important thing is to stay close enough to the Shepherd to hear Him when He speaks to us. God, the Holy Spirit, who dwells in us, will always guide us in the right direction if we are tuned in to hear His voice or feel His nudge.

Our Shepherd laid down His life for us so we could be saved from the evil one. We are secure in His hands. He says no one can snatch us from His hand or His Father’s hand. We are double wrapped in security.

He will guide us all the way through this life and bring us safely home. We can trust our Shepherd.
