You are valuable in the eyes of God
The most helpful folks are those who possess the strong paradox of confidence and humility. The person who says, “I don’t know how much I can help, but I will do all that I can.” The man who walks in strong confidence while also considering those around him. Anyone willing to lead and let others contribute is an influencer who can build any team and make every person better. Regrettably,...
Petty says children's camp is family's legacy
Richard Petty, with a record 200 Cup Series wins, seven championships and a first-ballot inductee into the Hall of Fame, is considered NASCAR’s greatest driver. He is spending the season celebrating 75 years of NASCAR participation by his famous family — basically since the inception of the stock car series in 1948 — and reflecting on the legacy that will be left behind. As he approached his 87th birthday, celebrated...

Will anyone listen to NASCAR's message?
The folks at NASCAR recently made three disciplinary calls that at first seem somewhat confusing. The first was correct, no question about it. The second was actually a no-call that Cup Series fans probably cheered. The third was no surprise, and it gave haters something fresh to hate. Here’s what happened: First: Two weeks ago rookie Carson Hocevar intentionally spun Harrison Burton under caution in Nashville. It cost Hocevar $50,000...
Martin County hiker climbs Mount Everest
When one hears a friend of a friend climbed to Mount Everest’s Base Camp, one assumes an experienced hiker, rock-climber-type decided to step up his or her game. Not so for Martin County’s resident Everest climber, Brian Leggett. Leggett recently returned from nearly the highest point on earth after a mentally and physically challenging 20-day trek that began as a thought while running one day. ...
People pleasing is lying
I’ve changed a lot over the last few years, but growing up and through the majority of my teens, twenties and very early thirties, I was a full fledged Type A, people pleasing, perfectionist. I’m sure if I tried really hard, I could point to some reasons for this, but truthfully, I think there’s so much in us that we are just born with. Many of the qualities I’m watching develop in my own children were present at birth. My husband and I didn’t encourage...
Jamesville teachers attend "William Friday Retreat"
Two teachers from Martin County Schools were among an elite group chosen to attend the 2024 William Friday Teachers Retreat. Amy Barsanti and Haley Bonds, teachers at Jamesville Elementary School, applied and were selected to attend the event — Enriching the Mind & Rejuvenating the Spirit “Down East” — held June 23-25 in Beaufort. The event, which was free to selected participants, included a “potpourri” of eastern North Carolina history,...
Fourteen things to do on a trip to Burnsville
For your next roadtrip in North Carolina, check out Burnsville, located in Yancey County. My partner, David, and I thoroughly enjoyed our experience and have not stopped raving about this quaint mountain town, located right near the Tennessee border. Burnsville is named after Otway Burns, a naval hero in the War of 1812 and an Onslow County native. Burnsville is in the shadow of Mount Mitchell, the highest mountain peak...
Nickolas aims for taekwondo gold
PARIS — A malformed vertebra couldn’t stop him. Neither could heart surgery, or a change of weight category that everyone thought was a big mistake. Breaking his arm in the buildup to the Paris Games was just a minor distraction, too. It seems there’s almost nothing that could derail CJ Nickolas’ quest for an Olympic medal. ...

Schewel's Home relocating in Williamston
Schewel’s Home, downtown Williamston’s flagship store since 1992, is moving to a larger location next month near Piggly Wiggly. The Williamston location has been a downtown retail anchor store, located on Main Street for the past 32 years. When Elias Schewel came to the United States in 1889 he had little idea he was planting a seed that would grow from Lynchburg, Virginia to West Virginia and eventually Williamston, North...
Protection from tarnished plant bugs
With cotton squaring, growers should have someone scouting their fields weekly for tarnished plant bugs. With the dry conditions, most of the adults are in silking corn. As corn pollinates and the silks dry, I expect many of these adults to move into cotton, especially if dry weeds continue to be a poor host. It pays more to protect cotton from tarnished plant bugs early (during squaring and early bloom)...
July 12: Today in History - Disco Demolition Night
Today is Friday, July 12, the 194th day of 2024. There are 172 days left in the year. Today's Highlight in History: On July 12, as an angry reaction to the popularity of disco music, the Chicago White Sox held the "Disco Demolition Night" promotion, in which a crate of disco records was blown up on the field between games of a double-header; the ensuing riot and damage to the...
Encourage everyone and build one another up
If you are close to my age, you may recall the publication of a novel on today’s date of July 11 in 1960 that impacted America’s 20th Century racial understanding equal to Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin of the 19th Century. It was To Kill a Mockingbird. Growing up during the era of the Civil Rights Movement, only about a hundred miles northeast of Monroeville, Alabama, the hometown of the author Harper Lee and also the living model for Maycomb, it greatly impressed my fundamental beliefs...
County manager search "remains in progress"
Martin County Commissioner Skip Gurganus has been more open than the other commissioners concerning the county managers’ selection process, and did so Monday evening when asked the question during the regular Jamesville Board of Commissioners meeting. Gurganus enjoys periodically attending town meetings to answer questions and offer updates on county matters. The commissioner’s unexpected Monday evening appearance in Jamesville was one of those nights. Gurganus offered explanations focusing on broadband...
A few thoughts from the WNBA to fencing
I have a few thoughts this week so buckle up, we are going to move quickly. How many players selected in the first round of the NBA draft did you recognize? For the record, you should know that Bronny James was picked in the second round. Keep that in mind before you answer. How about the WNBA? How many players selected in the first round of that draft did you...
July 11: Today in History - the fall of Srebrenica
Today is Thursday, July 11, the 193rd day of 2024. There are 173 days left in the year. Today's Highlight in History: On July 11, 1995, the U.N.-designated "safe haven" of Srebrenica (sreh-breh-NEET'-sah) in Bosnia-Herzegovina fell to Bosnian Serb forces, who subsequently carried out the killings of more than 8,000 Muslim men and boys. Also...
Two races develop for school board seats
The Martin County Board of Education will see competition for at least two of the four seats which are slated to be on the November ballot. The races begin in District 7 where incumbent school board chair and longtime member Van Heath has filed for another term on the school board. He will be challenged by James O. Shiver. Both candidates reside in the Jamesville district. The other race is...
Davis seeks disaster declaration due to drought
Congressman Don Davis (D-01) recently sent a letter to the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, calling for the immediate designation of all 19 counties in North Carolina’s First Congressional District as disaster areas due to the severe drought conditions affecting the region. “The situation has worsened since my public call last week for an emergency declaration due to drought. Three counties in North Carolina’s First Congressional District have seen the drought worsen to a D2 or severe drought level,” said Congressman Davis. “Sixteen others...
