Everything you need to know about the housing crisis

Over the summer, Purdue University Residences underwent significant changes—some of which were swiftly reversed, while others were adjusted to address growing concerns.

One effort the university has made was the addition of seven new UR Boiler apartment buildings. The housing website now has 24 properties under the URBA section, which shows traditional apartments students can choose to stay in, unlike the standard residence halls. In June, there were only 15.

15 of the 24 URBA properties are master leased, according to the Purdue’s Lead Communication Specialist Trevor Peters, meaning the university has contractual agreements with the property owners. The list of master leased properties was 12 in June, so the university appears to have established three new agreements in less than two months.

In a July email to the Exponent, Peters said, “The university continues to work through housing assignments for first-year students, working on master leases for additional local apartments.”

Peters’s email was in response to the more concerning housing reallocations in July.

On July 10, the university unexpectedly changed the housing assignments of approximately 700 students, which make up 11% of those who re-signed with UR. Students were relocated to different housing assignments and/or experienced roommate additions without prior notice.
