Herald News Briefs: Investigation continues into Cumberland crash

One Farmville resident is dead after a traffic accident Tuesday in Cumberland County. According to Virginia State Police, the incident happened at 1:55 p.m. on Guinea Road in Cumberland. A 2003 Nissan Frontier was heading eastbound on Guinea Road, roughly six-tenths of a mile east of Holman Mill Road, when the Frontier ran off the right side of the road and hit a tree.

The driver, 68-year-old Farmville resident Kennie L. Brown, died at the scene. State Police say he was not wearing a seatbelt and it’s still unclear what triggered the accident. The crash remains under investigation.

Why was hospital’s kitchen closed?

We had this question raised a couple times earlier this week, by residents who visited Centra Southside Community Hospital to see family members. In each case, the hospital’s kitchen was closed. Centra staff say it wasn’t a major issue, as part had just been closed for a few days in order to get some maintenance done. So while the whole thing may have appeared closed, in fact part of it was still open and operating this entire week.

“We serviced all patients through the half of the kitchen that was open,” said Stephanie McBride. She works as Director of Communications for Centra. McBride added that the full kitchen was in fact back up and running now.
