Longwood athletics mourns the passing of former Sports Information Director and Longwood Athletics Hall of Fame member Hoke Currie.

“Our thoughts and prayers go to the Curries at this time,” said Longwood Athletics Director Tim Hall. “We know how much Hoke has meant to the Longwood Athletics family throughout the years. His focus on putting student-athletes first and telling their stories has resonated throughout the years.”

Currie was the first full-time sports information director at Longwood, and he chronicled the exploits of hundreds of Lancer student-athletes during his 19 years at the school, including standouts like Jerome Kersey, Tina Barrett, Michael Tucker, Julie Dayton and more.

During his tenure, he received 21 citations of excellence in publications from the College Sports Communicators (formerly the College Sports Information Directors of America), and he was a founding member of the Virginia Sports Information Directors.

Currie also provided a wealth of material for the recent biography of basketball star and Longwood alum Jerome Kersey, Overcoming The Odds, by Kerry Eggers.

“Hoke leaves behind a legacy that shows in the rich history of storytelling throughout the annals of Longwood athletics history,” said Longwood Director of Athletic Communications Sam Hovan. “His passion and care for student-athletes shines through, even today. His contributions and influence will not be forgotten.

Hoke Currie is survived by his wife, Nancy, his daughter Margaret, his son-in-law Luis Coyoy, and his beloved grandchildren, Emilio and Marisol.
