NC high school football Week 1 storylines

Here are a few storylines to prepare you for kickoff in Week 1.

    • Cape Fear at Pine Forest: The defensive-minded Trojans enter the season as three-time reigning All American Conference champs behind DI recruit Donovan Jonson on the O-line and 1,000-yard rusher Jamari Jones. They'll start the season with a stiff test from last season's United 8 runner-up Cape Fear, which clobbered Pine Forest 47-6 in last season's opener.
    • Richmond Senior at Seventy-First: Reigning 3A East champion Seventy-First is aiming for a state championship this year, and the journey begins with historically strong Richmond in Week 1. The Falcons are loaded with star power, led by QB Deandre Nance, RB Jayson Franklin and LB/RB Donavan Frederick.
    • Gray's Creek at E.E. Smith: Three years removed from a winless season, the Golden Bulls start 2024 with a new coach and new outlook, but they have a tough Week 1 opponent in Gray's Creek, which battled its way into a playoff appearance last year.
    • South View at Overhills: The Tigers already have taken some hits before the first snap, losing standout WR/S Donavan Pauling-Outlaw, LB Dontario Austin, OT Donta' Marshmon and WR Anthony Farrior to transfer. But returning QB Tyriq Clarida, RB Rashad Dockery and others plan to keep the Tigers on track.
    • Terry Sanford at Topsail: The Bulldogs go coastal for their opener, looking to repeat last season's 41-20 win at home against the Pirates. After losing 14 seniors to graduation, Terry Sanford turns to new leaders like Delsin Barrett on the line, Asa Robinson and Izaiah Williams on defense.
    • Westover at Seaforth: The Wolverines open the season in Pittsboro against a 2A member of the Mid-Carolina Conference, looking to set the tone for a young squad led by Jaylen Gurley on the defensive line and senior QB Zachary Evans.
    • Jack Britt at Hoke County: The Bucs finished strong last season with wins at Gray's Creek and South View after taking Cape Fear to overtime. They're bringing a bigger team to the field this year in hopes of building off that momentum.
    • Douglas Byrd at Red Springs: The Eagles look to avenge last season's opening loss at 2A Red Springs behind QB Isaiah Pope and a speedy four-man RB rotation.
