Who are Fayetteville State University's top earners?

Fayetteville State University spends about $3.12 million to pay its 843 employees, data from the University of North Carolina Salary Database shows.

The median salary for the historically Black university in Fayetteville is $182,000, and the average salary is $158,874.

Positions include office and administrative jobs, deans and custodial staff, according to records obtained by The Fayetteville Observer.

Fayetteville State University’s highest-paid employees

The highest-paid FSU employee, at a salary of $314,443 per year, is Chancellor Darryl Allison, who’s been with the university for more than three years.

The second highest-paid employee, at $254,000, is Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Dr. Monica Leach, who’s been with the university for about three years.

Vice chancellors are also among the top-paid employees: Dr. Lillian Wanjagi, who’s been with the university for nearly two years and is vice chancellor of business and finance, makes $234,000; Wanda Jenkins, who’s been with the university for more than 30 years and is vice chancellor of legal, audit, risk and compliance, makes $220,011.

Other top earners include deans, associate vice chancellors, the university’s athletic director and a tenured professor:

— Dr. Afua Arhin, who’s been with the university for about 14 years and is dean of the College of Health, Science and Technology, makes $200,802.— Hector Molina, who’s been with the university for more than two years and is chief information officer and vice chancellor for information technology and telecommunications, makes $197,563. — Ulysses Taylor, who’s been with the university for 32 years and is dean of the Broadwell College of Business and Economics, makes $195,905.— Director of Athletics Anthony “Todd” Bennett, who’s been with the university for about 24 years, makes $195,000. — Kenneth Spayd, who’s been with the university for more than five years and is associate vice chancellor of finance, makes $190,320. — Samantha Hargrove, who’s been with the university for about three years and is vice chancellor of marketing and communications and is chief of staff, makes $183,548.— Vice Chancellor for University Advancement Omar Bell, who’s been in the spot for about a year; makes $182,000.— Assad Tavakoli, who's been with the university for more than 41 years and is the W. T. Brown endowed chair and distinguished professor of economics in the Broadwell College of Business and Economics, makes $179,622.— Dr. Marcus Cox, who’s been with the university for two years and is dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences makes $174,720. — Jennifer Edwards, who’s been with the university for seven years and is associate dean for the School of Nursing, makes $173,333.

Other data shows that some professors and associate professors also make six-figure salaries of between $100,562 to $132,397.

Associate professors make mid-range salaries of about $77,000, while supervisor positions make about $65,900 and police officer II are at $57,876.

Among the lower-end salaries are traffic attendants at $39,339 and housekeepers at $33,099.

According to UNC’s salary database, other chancellors in the UNC system include UNC-Charlotte Chancellor Dr. Sharon Gaber at $579,237; UNC-Greensboro Chancellor Dr. Franklin Gilliam at $451,926; Eastern Carolina University Chancellor Dr. Philip Rogers at $441,324; Dr. Harold Martin, chancellor of NC A&T, at $433,848; Western Carolina University Chancellor Dr. Kelli Brown is at $358,575; UNC-Pembroke Chancellor Dr. Robin Cummings is at $345,636;

Salary data for Winston-Salem University Chancellor Bonita Brown, who was appointed to the spot in May; North Carolina Central University Chancellor Dr. Karrie Dixon, who was appointed in June; UNC Chancellor Lee Brown, who was appointed this month; UNC-Asheville Chancellor Dr. Kimberly van Noort, who was appointed in January; and Elizabeth City State University interim Chancellor Catherine Edmonds, who was appointed in July, was not listed in the database.
