What began as a peaceful camping trip for some turned into an evacuation and rescue. Due to the astounding amounts of rain Middle Georgia has seen over the past 3 days, areas that typically do not flood did on Monday, March 27, 2023. This is true for the popular High Falls State Park in Monroe County.

High Falls State Park evacuated its guests and closed the park Monday following the storms. The Towaliga River, which runs through the State Park and offers beautiful waterfall views, was not able to contain the amount of rain we received. The river area campground flooded, leaving RV campers and tent campers stranded.

Fortunately, first responders, including the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Monroe County Fire Rescue, Law Enforcement, and the Georgia State Park staff, were able to rescue the stranded campers by boat and take them to safety.

High Falls State Park is expected to remain closed until next week. Nearby Indian Springs State Park in Butts County has also temporarily closed some of its amenities due to flooding. These include the day-use areas, the Spring picnic area, the Spring house, the Overland nature trail, and the boat ramp.

Authorities also advise drivers to be cautious when out and about. Many roads have flooded around the area, and it is unclear whether the road has washed out beneath them. If you encounter standing water in the road, it is better to be safe than sorry. Turn around and find a safer route.
