Get to Know Georgia's Smallest County

The award of smallest Georgia County in terms of land size goes to Athens-Clarke County in Northeast Georgia. The Classic City may only be 121.3 square miles, but it feels anything but small. Based on the 2022 U.S. Census, Athens-Clarke County's population is 127,358.

One of the main reasons that Athens-Clarke County feels so big is that its neighboring counties seem to almost fuse with Athens in terms of the vibes and offerings. Many residents live in Oconee, Oglethorpe, and Madison counties while working in or frequenting Athens. This alone makes this small Georgia county seem much larger than it actually is.

Something for Everyone in Athens

The second reason Clarke County feels large is that it has so many things to do for everyone. Athens is home to incredible local restaurants, a wide variety of shopping, and plenty of outdoor activities, including multiple parks, Bear Hollow Zoo, Sandy Creek Park, Intramural Fields, Botanical Gardens, and plenty of places in and around campus to walk, run, or jog. It's hard to get bored in this fun little city.

Of course, Athens-Clarke County is home to the University of Georgia. Its sprawling campus features gorgeous architecture and rich history (especially downtown). With the hustle and bustle of students and staff, it certainly does not feel like it could be Georgia's smallest county with one of the largest universities in Georgia (the largest in terms of land size goes to Berry College in Rome, GA).
