Why is Georgia Becoming the East Coast Hollywood?

    2023-04-14

Let the credits run at the end of a movie or television show. You may be surprised to see what is now becoming the infamous Georgia peach and the echoing jingle, "Filmed in Georgia," in the background.

A drive through the state, and you are likely to pass either a film studio or a company that services the film industry. There are over a dozen film studios in Atlanta, Savannah, and Covington. Right up the road from Covington, in Madison, is B.I. Production Works, which offers vehicle and trailer rentals for film production. Some of their clients include Instant Family, Jumanji, The Resident, and Bad Boys for Life.

Why is Georgia becoming a favorite for film and television production?

There are a few reasons, but the primary one is money! Georgia offers one of the best tax rebates of any state, which is 30%. Production companies receive a 20% rebate for filming in Georgia and an additional 10% if they include the "Filmed in Georgia" logo that I discussed earlier.

A second reason is the weather. Since Georgia stays relatively warm throughout the year and sees little to no snow, production companies can film in Georgia year-round.

The third reason is that Georgia is unique in its topography. We have beaches, mountains, South Georgia cropland, and everything in between. Production companies can easily find the perfect location for any of their landscape needs.

Georgia is a serious contender in film production and has worked hard to bring in this stream of revenue for the state. The next time you watch a movie or a show, keep an eye out for the credits. It just might have been filmed in our great state.
