    2023-06-28

Contrary to popular belief, mermaids aren't just a little girl's fantasy. Men and women from all over the country pursue mermaiding as a career. The first mermaid underwater "mermaid" shows were thought to have begun in the 1940s at the Weeki Wachee Springs. Since then, these shows have evolved into some of the most majestical in the country.

Becoming a mermaid full-time is a lot less magical than the shows you see. There are only a few opportunities that offer full-time mermaid positions, and the competition for these spots is fierce. In fact, most mermaids have one or two more jobs in addition to slipping into a tail suit and taking onlookers to a fantasy world. This still doesn't stop mermaids from pursuing a career with everything they've got.

It's an extreme sport. Mermaids must be comfortable in the water, able to hold their breath, and have incredible strength and agility. Conventions, festivals, pageants, and auditions are held annually to provide mermaids and mermans a way to get together, share ideas, and build a community.

Not only are the physical requirements strenuous, but the costumes are expensive. Tails, fins, makeup, and accessories, but be able to withstand water and translate well for majestical underwater scenes.

The bottom line is for the most talented mermaids and mermans, this profession can certainly pay your bills. However, it is a hard road to get there, and only an elite few make it! Do you have what it takes to be a mermaid?
