Don't Make This Mistake Setting Up Your Camper: RV Edition

    2023-09-11

It's another wonderful Monday morning, so let's begin with a game! Can you spot what's wrong with the camping setup in the picture below? It may seem like a small detail, but it can have big consequences!

Do you see it yet? Ready for a hint (scroll below)?

Hint: It has to do with the stability of the camper.

    Here's the answer:

Even though the feet on the stabilizer jacks seem sturdy, it is best to use stabilizer pads to keep your RV from sinking into the ground. Over time, depending on how soft the ground is, one or more stabilizer jacks can begin sinking into the ground, causing your camper to become unlevel. This is not only inconvenient but can also damage appliances, such as the refrigerator if your camper becomes too unlevel.

RV stabilizer pads do not have to be a big expense. We use 2 x 6 boards, which work perfectly. However, if you want to, you can spring for actual RV pads, which come in many different shapes and sizes. Some look like buckets, while others are shaped more like a board. No matter, what type of RV stabilizer pad you use, the larger footprint covers more surface area and helps keep your RV jacks level and from sinking into the ground.
