New ballast water pollution rule exempts existing Great Lakes ships
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has finalized new ballast water regulations that exempt existing Great Lakes ships from having to install onboard treatment. On Tuesday, Sept. 24, the EPA finalized a long-awaited requirement for oceangoing vessels and new lake freighters to install treatment systems that prevent the spread of invasive species via ballast water discharge, but the rules do not apply to Great Lakes ships already in service.

2 missing Michigan boys found safe in California
MIDLAND, MI — Two boys previously believed to be in danger and missing have been found safe in California, the Michigan State Police reports. Yesterday, on Thursday, Sept. 26, police issued a “missing endangered advisory” for Theodore Zurawic, 2, and Sebastian Rodriguez, 6, asking for the public’s help to find them. Boy, 12, dies from injuries caused by falling tree at nature center

Michigan electric, gas utilities get approval for multimillion-dollar rate hikes
A pair of Michigan energy utilities have the official green light to raise customers’ rates beginning in 2025. Electric customers served by Upper Peninsula Power Co., or UPPCO, will see a $9 million total rate hike, while natural gas customers of Michigan Gas Utilities Corp. in southern Michigan should expect a total increase of $7 million under separate settlement agreements approved by Michigan regulators on Thursday, Sept. 26.
