Georgia Tech's Hiroshi Tai wins NCAA individual golf title; Florida State makes match play

Georgia Tech sophomore Hiroshi Tai survived a triple-bogey on his next-to-last hole at the Omni La Costa Resort in Carlsbad, Calif., and won the NCAA Division I individual golf championship at 3-under-par 285 on Monday, also helping the Yellow Jackets clinch the eighth and final spot for the match play tournament.

Tai had a four-shot lead with two holes to play before his triple at the par-3 eighth hole. He parred No. 9 for a 71 and held off six players tied at 2-under, including Florida State freshman Luke Clanton (71).

Illinois locked up the top seed for match play with a 6-under team score, 16 shots ahead of second-place Vanderbilt. Virginia and North Carolina tied for third at 11-over, FSU shot 12-over, Auburn 19-over and Ohio State 22-over.

The defending champion Florida Gators finished 11th, four shots behind Georgia Tech.

The first round of match play will be Illinois vs. Georgia Tech, Vanderbilt vs. Ohio State, Virginia vs. Auburn and North Carolina vs. FSU.

Nick Gabrelcik of the University of North Florida, playing as an individual shot 71 in the final round and improved from a tie for 22 ^nd to a tie for 15 ^th at 1-over 289.

How to watch the NCAA golf match play

The first round on Tuesday will be on Peacock from 1-3:30 p.m. and Golf Channel from 6-10 p.m. The final day will be aired on Wednesday from 6-10 p.m. on Golf Channel.
