Fresno City College dominates Sierra, but one player puts on a dazzling display

Having a two quarterback system during games suits Fresno City College football coach Tony Caviglia just well.

But when he has Ryan Markarian (Clovis West) or Ya’J Vance (Edison), he’s all smiles because he can count on them to make things happen as was the case Saturday afternoon against Sierra.

Markarian threw two touchdowns and Vance had a touchdown pass and ran one for a score as the Rams rolled to a 40-14 victory at Ratcliffe Stadium.

“The season’s high for this team,” Fresno City coach Tony Caviglia said. “We haven’t even come close to touching it. We just got to continue to grow and get ready to play next week.”

The Rams’ defense was just as dominant, pitching a shutout in the second half, and for the game had three interceptions.

But it was Vance who was at Minot State last season and didn’t get to play and found himself back in Fresno hoping to play.

He finally found a home at Fresno City (2-0), and he was just excited to finally play in his second game with the Rams and see the end zone.

Vance scrambled, looking for an open receiver, but he found a hole and ran into the end zone.

Vance’s lone touchdown came when he was scrambling away from defenders and found a wide open Andrew Chavez who was in the end zone.

“I felt like I was 10 again,” he said. “It was amazing. I just know I’m getting better. The first week I had a little jitters. It felt great being back there.”

Ramon Ruiz led the Rams with 115 receiving yard and a touchdown.
