Delta sturgeon bite rebounds with new regulations, McSwain trout plants producing limit action, and a Wishon trout bite steady, Dave Hurley reported. Pine Flat king salmon bite exciting anglers, Brian Klassen said. Don Pedro trout and king salmon hitting, Monte Smith reported. South Valley Waterway producing catfish and striper action, and Isabella bass, catfish and trout active Copes Tackle said. Shaver trout action good, Dick Nichols reported.

The flows in the north section of the California Aqueduct remain fast due to steady water exports out of the south Delta into San Luis Reservoir. Triple-digit heat has limited fishing to early morning hours or into the night.

They are also holding a live raffle at the site. Striperz Gone Wild is a charitable group of local anglers with diverse fishing backgrounds focusing on giving back to the fishing community, giving free tackle boxes to kids, and helping the next generation enjoy the sport of fishing

In the southern section of the aqueduct, Cope’s Rod and Tackle in Bakersfield reported aqueduct anglers reported good action for striped bass and catfish with cut sardines, anchovies, small swimbaits, or flukes after check gates. Anglers are moving from gate to gate until they find feeding fish, but most of the striped bass are undersized. Catfishing is best with dip bait, chicken liver, or cut baits.

Michael Crayne of Valley Rod and Gun in Clovis reported the best action for the larger fish at Eastman is in the early mornings or late afternoons while small fish are the rule during the daytime hours. Big plastic worms dragged on the bottom on a Carolina-rig, Keitech swimbaits, or large profile jigs are working, but everything has been finesse. Eastman continues to be the top local lake for a quality grade of largemouth bass, but the numbers of double-digit largemouths has decreased. Not much change at Hensley with catfish or carp taking center stage, and the carp remain thick in the shallows. Catfishing is best at night with chicken liver or dip bait. Both lakes are releasing water, and Eastman dropped less than a quarter foot to 534.27 feet in elevation and 47% of capacity with Hensley receding 2½ feet to 474.69 feet in elevation and 19% of capacity.

At Eastman, no tournaments are scheduled in September with only one in October, the Sierra Bass Club on Oct. 19. At Hensley, the next scheduled tournament is in mid-November.

Trout fishing remains excellent as Monte Smith of Gold Country Sport Fishing continues to find solid action for quality holdover rainbows running smaller ExCel spoons or Needlefish along with Apex lures at depths from 75 to 96 feet. He said, “We started running my custom spoons at 2½ mph, but the fish didn’t want the faster troll, so we put on the smaller spoons and slowed down to 2.0 mph and the fish immediately started to jump on.

The shad are small at 1 to 2 inches, and the bait schools are thick. We must have had 100 grebes sitting over the bait, and the bass are also down with the trout and small king salmon feeding on the shad. There are loads of small king salmon in the 8- to 10-inch range, and we are releasing them alongside the boat without netting them. The rainbows in the 2- to 2½-pound range are really putting on a fight, jumping out of the water, and they are fighting harder than the 3 to 4 pounders. It’s been good.” Kyle Wise of Head Hunter Guide Service has been heading over from New Melones to Don Pedro, and his report was similar to Smith, and they landed king salmon to 5.1 pounds this week working Speedy Shiners from 80 to 100 feet within the shad schools. The bass bite is just now starting to improve, but many of the spotted bass are deep working over the shad. There are five bass tournaments scheduled through the end of October including a huge fundraising tournament ‘Live Like Mason’ Memorial for the family of Mason Ferrulli to be held at Fleming Meadows on Oct. 26th with a $200 entry fee. Launch updates are posted at www.donpedrolake.com .

Spotted bass are plentiful among the shad schools, and small shad-patterned spoons, tubes, plastics on the drop-shot, or Senkos are working in deep water and along the bluff walls and ledges. There are no bass tournaments scheduled in September or October. The lake dropped 2 feet to 813.49 feet in elevation and 47% of capacity. There are no bass tournaments scheduled in October, but there are six club tournaments in November. The Merced River continues to drop, and it is 816 cfs at Merced Falls downstream of Lake McSwain. The Reel Deal Market and Barrett’s Cove Marina are open only on weekends and holidays through October.

Call: Central Valley Bait and Tackle (209) 312-9417.

    Lake McSwain

    Trout 3

About 4,000 pounds of Calaveras Trout Farm rainbow trout were planted in the lake prior to the weekend’s Merced Irrigation District’s Lake McSwain Fall Trout Derby on Oct. 5-6. Trout to 22 inches were reported, and with the heavy plants, many limits were taken by bank anglers along with trollers.

The McSwain Marina is open on only weekends or holidays through October. The lake rose to 93% of capacity.

The lake dropped slightly over a foot to 2,558.89 feet in elevation and 28% with water releases at First Point dropping to 517 cfs. Cope’s reported solid bass action with a variety of offerings including crawdad-imitation plastics on a Texas-rig, jigs, square-bill crankbaits, big plastic worms, or spinnerbaits. The catfish bite has been excellent in many areas around the lake, and one local angler landed several quality shiskerfish on cut mackerel. Camp 9 and French Gulch have been top areas with Triple S Dip Bait, shrimp, or mackerel. Crappie action remains steady near Red’s Marina, Engineer’s Point, the South Fork, and French Gulch over submerged structure at depths from 20 to 25 feet with minijigs, small Keitech swimbaits, or small minnows.

In the upper Kern River, Cope’s rated the trout bite as fair to good with fly anglers finding success with dry-dropper rigs with a Yellow Sallie nymph on the bottom. Salmon eggs, crickets, or Panther Martin spinners are also effective. The water is dropping, and the clarity continues to improve. The Upper Kern was stocked last week in Section 4; Riverside Park in Kernville to Powerhouse #3; Section 5, Fairview Dam to Lazy River Lodge; and Section 6, Fairview Dam to Johnsondale Bridge. In the lower Kern, trout have been caught in the canyon with trout jigs and panther martins. Both largemouth and small mouth bass are taken on small plastics, Get Bent baits, or spinnerbaits. Catfish are being caught with nightcrawlers, chicken liver and cut bait. The flows at Kernville are steady at 306 cfs.

    Lake Kaweah

The lake dropped slightly to 593.00 feet in elevation. Cope’s reported numbers of smaller spotted bass are holding in the 5-to-20-foot zone with plastics in baitfish or brown colors on a shaky head or Ned rig along with small profile jigs. Catfishing remains best with chicken liver or cut baits while crappie are found near submerged structure with small live minnows. The Kaweah River dropped to 60 cfs.

The California Bass Federation held a two-day National Bass Semi-Finals over the past weekend, with 10-fish limits to 15 pounds, but most limits consisted of bass in the 1- to 1½-pound range. Tim Wells and Andy Morita will represent California at the National Finals in November. Michael Crayne reported finesse jigs were the top technique for the small fish. The lake dropped nearly 3 feet to 508.18 feet in elevation and 46% of capacity. Sycamore Island is open once daily from 6 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The flows in the San Joaquin River at Friant held at 430 cfs.

Small bass remain the rule as the Manteca Bassin’ Buddies held a tournament on Saturday with the winning limit at 12.45 pounds with second place dropping to just under 9 pounds. The shad schools remain very thick with 1- to 2-inch baitfish, and the spotted bass are gorging themselves in deep water. Plastics on the drop-shot remain the best technique, but you have to finesse it to get them to bite. Kyle Wise of Head Hunter Guide Service has been heading to Don Pedro for rainbow trout, and this is the best description of how the trout bite has slowed.

“One experienced troller was out for several hours this week for a single holdover rainbow,” he said. Club tournaments dominate the lake in the fall months with 3 remaining in October, and three scheduled in November. The lake basically held at 1035.70 feet in elevation and 76% of capacity.

    Pine Flat Reservoir/Kings River

    Bass 2 Trout 2 Kokanee 0 King salmon 3 Catfish 2 Crappie 2

King salmon continue to attract trollers to Pine Flat, and Brian Klassen of Reedley was back out twice this week with Kyle Allen, his son Mark and Aaron Kimberling on Tuesday, and he reported a tough bite working the main lake channel from Deer Creek to Windy Gap for singles on trout and kings from sunup until noon.

“Then the bite took off from noon until 2 p.m., and we ended up with seven kings from 20 to 23 inches and 4 trout to 16 inches. The kings were found at depths from 60 to 90 feet with the trout higher in the water column from 40 to 60 feet. Brad’s Cut Plugs in Black Magic or rolling shad did the damage on the kings while Speedy Shiners and Needlefish in Cop Car picked up the rainbows,” he said.

“The lake was flat calm until 11:30 a.m., then a wind came in and that helped the bite. I was back out on Saturday with Mike Hemmerling, Christian Garza, and my brother Evan, and we found a much better bite as we boated eight kings to 21 inches and four rainbows to 19 inches along with a pair of bass to 17 inches. The kings were again in that 75- to 90-foot range and rainbows were 35 to 55 feet, but the big 19-inch rainbow was caught rolling shad at 80 feet. The bait had moved into the Deer Creek area, and that’s where the fish were. It hasn’t been barnburner fishing like in August and September, but consistent and steady.”

For bass, Michael Crayne reported numbers of small spotted bass are found in deep water on jigs or plastics on a shakey head. The occasional largemouth bass is found up the river arm near rocky structure. In the lower Kings, the last plant was the week of the 22, and the remaining planted rainbows are holding in the deep pools as the flows have dropped once again to 228 cfs. A few planters are taken on Power Bait, salmon eggs, nightcrawlers, spinners, or spoons, but the action has slowed. The lake rose slightly to 823.79 feet in elevation and 40% of capacity. No club tournaments are scheduled in October with only two scheduled in November.

San Luis Reservoir and O’Neill Forebay

    Striper 2 Catfish 2 Bass 2 Crappie 2

Mickey Clements of Coyote Bait and Tackle in Morgan Hill reported the O’Neill Forebay continues to be the hot spot for action, but the striped bass are undersized in the 12- to 17-inch range. Flukes, anchovies, or pile worms around Check 12 are all effective for the small linesides. If it’s action you want, the forebay is the place. The grass is thinning out, creating vastly improved conditions for casting. In the main lake, Clements reported fewer anglers out with the heat.

Roger George of Roger George Guide Service reported that trollers are having trouble getting the suspended fish to bite in the heavy algae laden water. “I took out a guest , Bob Cullers of Oklahoma - who flew in to fish with me - and we had to work hard for most of the day to find biting fish- but one bite from a nice 38”, 23.2 lb striper changed the day. The hefty fish was released. The bite has been tough overall with fish sitting in 40-75 feet of water - with most guys reporting just a few fish per day . Water temps are upwards of 76-84 degrees right now.”

The main lake rose slightly to 51% of capacity while the forebay dropped slightly to 83% of capacity. To check the real time wind conditions on the lake - use windfinder.com/forecast/san_luis_reservoir .

    Bass Lake

    Bass 2 Trout 2 Kokanee 0

Crayne reported bass anglers are working around the docks with Senkos on a wacky-rig during the mid-day. There are still holdover rainbow trout to be found for trollers with blade/’crawler combinations or Wedding Rings tipped with a nightcrawler behind a dodger at depths from the surface to 25 feet from the Forks to the dam, but fewer trollers have been trying. Edison/Florence/Mammoth Pool

Fishing action remains limited with fewer anglers heading up Kaiser Pass. The high country lakes continue to release water with Edison at 50, Florence at 43, and Mammoth Pool to 13%. Road conditions are available at the High Sierra Ranger Station: 855-5355 or https://www.fs.usda.gov/sierra . Fire danger is extreme in the high country.

    Shaver Lake/Huntington Lake

    Trout 3 Kokanee 1

Shaver Lake guide emeritus, Dick Nichols of Dick’s Fishing Charters said, “The trout bite is holding up at Shaver, but the kokanee are mostly gone.

A good amount of boats was on the lake during the weekend, and many were up in the Stevenson Bay area for yearling and holdover trout at depths from 20 to 30 feet with Dick’s Trout Busters . The great weather has brought out numbers of anglers, but the lake continues to drop. Check with the marinas for their closing date. The Shaver Marina asks that those who are docking there to remove their boats before Oct. 15. The Edison ramp is open but unknown how long.”

At Huntington, kokanee are moving into the shallows in the inlets, and the trout are responding by moving in to feed on kokanee eggs while the brown trout are feeding on the kokanee. Inclement weather is necessary before the dedicated group of brown trout trollers make a showing. Shaver dropped to 56% of capacity with Huntington dropping slightly to 69% of capacity.

    Wishon/Courtright

    Trout 3

Wishon continues to be a good location for trollers with Rapalas, spoons, Wedding Rings tipped with a piece of nightcrawler, or blade/crawler combinations at three to four 4 colors of lead core line. Courtright is down to a very small pool as it was drained to allow work on Helms Powerhouse Intake and discharge gates. The gate Courtright Way just past the turnoff for McKinley Grove Road will remain closed closed until the regularly scheduled reopening on Memorial Day 2025 Weekend, depending upon weather. The Wishon RV Park and Store has closed for the season so anglers will have to come prepared with supplies.

The weather put a kibosh on those wanting to chase bluefin tuna, and it is expected to blow 25 knots on Wednesday. This will limit rockfishing trips until the weather calms down offshore since rockfishing is restricted to depths greater than 50 fathoms during the month of October. The Queen of Hearts returned with 21 limits and 2 lings.

Chris’s Fishing and Whale Watching has made the most of the deep water rockfish season with steady limits of big rockies along with huge ling cod to a whopping 40 pounds. The Check Mate returned with 24 limits and 27 lingcod to 36 pounds on the opener while the Caroline posted 16 limits including sub-limits of vermilion rockfish.

From the surf, Mickey Clements reported striped bass action remains strong in the early mornings or late evenings with Duo Realis 140 Tide Minnow Lance or Sprat’s in Midnight Black 2 while surf perch action is best with Lucky 13 grubs in motor oil red flake on a Carolina-rig.

Striped bass continue to fill limits within San Francisco Bay, and Captain Ron Koyasako of Nautilus Excursions out of San Francisco once again posted quick limits for his passengers over the weekend. He said, “We had them boiling all around the boat, and a big school around 100 yards came through before the sea lions scattered them. They were stacked up 35 to 40 feet deep, and it’s amazing how many you can catch in a short period of time. The bass ranged from 18-inches to 6 pounds. We did see some white sea bass this week, but once again, they didn’t want any part of our anchovies. After picking up limits of stripers, we worked the flats for three halibut, releasing 10 shakers on Sunday.” Rockfish season north of Point Lopez opened to deeper than 50 fathoms on Tuesday, Oct. 1, and as anticipated, fishing was ‘lights out’ at Rittenburg Bank. Rittenburg is an offshore structure north of the Farallon Islands and south of the closed Cordell Banks, and these grounds were opened for the first time in over two decades in 2023. It takes a lengthy ride to make it to the banks, but the incredible fishing sells itself. It is a bit of a run from San Francisco Bay, but the fast 56-foot catamaran, the California Dawn 2, can make it in around 2½ hours . Captain Shawn Taylor ran the boat on the opener for ‘Epic’ action with 28 limits of rockfish along with 28 limits of lingcod to 22 pounds. It was much the same story on Wednesday, Oct. 2 with 17 limits of rockfish and lingcod to 20 pounds.

The California Dawn 2 and Western Outdoor News deep-water rockfish charter scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 9 to Rittenburg Bank has been re-scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 23 due to 25 knot winds anticipated this week. This is a Hookup Baits sponsored trip, and there will be free baits for angler use and a Hookup Bait Rep to show you how to use them, effectively. Upon arrival, each angler will receive a Western Outdoor News supply bag packed with an Aftco hat, Gamakatsu hooks, a spool of Izorline, Costa Gear, a Katch Fishing Hook Keeper, a free Cancun vacation voucher and more. The San Luis Obispo County party boats posted some impressive rockfish scores over the weekend due to the recently opened deep water grounds. On Sunday, the Endeavor , Avenger , and Starfire out of Morro Bay Landing put their combined 39 passengers onto limits with 290 assorted rockfish, 49 vermilion, 51 Boccaccio, two black cod and a Petrale sole. Out of Virg’s Landing, the Fiesta was out on a ½-day trip on Saturday with 18 anglers for half-limits of 61 assorted and 11 vermilion rockfish. The grandaddy of all striped bass tournaments, the 76th Annual Rio Vista Bass Derby and Festival, arrives this year on Oct. 11-13. There will be some changes to the fishing derby this year due to the second year of a salmon closure along with the new regulations for catch-and-release for white sturgeon. Several years ago, inspired by the California Striped Bass Association – Isleton Chapter, the derby was one of first to feature a target-length instead of rewarding the heaviest striped bass. The rules for this year’s Rio Vista Bass Tournament are yet another adaptation to remain relevant.

This year’s tournament rules have changed and there are two ways to be a winner –

Big Money Prize and 2nd Chance Raffle.

The adult derby is for striped bass only while the Kid’s Derby is for striped Bass and catfish. Anglers may submit up to two fish each day of the three days of the tournament for a total of six fish, and all fish must be caught on the same day they are submitted. Anglers may fish from San Francisco Bay to Sacramento, and all fish must be weighed in at the Official Weigh Station at 1 Main Street, in Rio Vista. Complete rules and regulations are available at the following website: https://bassfestival.com/ .

The Adult Striped Bass Derby prizes are as follows: 1st Place: $4,000; 2nd Place: $2,000; 3rd Place: $1,000; 4th – 8th Place: Fishing gear donated by local sponsors; Additional Prizes will be given out, donated by various sponsors. Kid’s Derby (age 15 and under): Striped bass and catfish - 1st Place $100 Gift Card; 2nd Place $75 Gift Card; 3rd Place $50 Gift Card; Additional prizes donated by local sponsors.

In addition to the fishing derby, the weekend is a huge festival with live music, vendors, and various attractions including the annual parade down Main Street.

The white sturgeon season reopened on Oct. 1 for catch-and-release only, and the action was spectacular with six-pack operators reporting up to 12 diamondbacks to the boat. There are specific new regulations for the catch-and-release fishery, and they specify expanded handling requirements: Any sturgeon greater than 60 inches fork length may not be removed from the water and shall be released immediately. Additionally, sturgeon of any size shall not be held out of the water suspended by the gills, gill plates, mouth or solely by the tail, and shall not be dragged across the ground, boat decks or piers. Anglers are still required to have a valid Sturgeon Fishing Report Card in their possession.

Triple-digit heat continues to plague the Delta region, and with the water temperatures in the low 70s striped bass action has slowed. The best reports have been in and around Liberty Island where the water temperatures are cooler at 67 degrees. Stripers in the 22- to 28-inch range are plentiful for those throwing topwater lures in the shallows. Finesse techniques are best for numbers of largemouth bass, and Roboworm’s in Margarita Mutilator on a drop-shot rig or Senkos on a dead-stick technique are effective on the San Joaquin side of the Delta.

Randy Pringle, the Fishing Instructor, reported a solid crankbait bite using shad-patterned Squarebilled crankbaits around rock or tules. There is an amazing amount of threadfin shad in the Delta at the present time.
