A nude man on foot was killed by a big rig on Highway 99 in Fresno on Wednesday, the California Highway Patrol said.

The man was reported by a 911 caller about 4:10 a.m. on Highway 99 near McKinley Avenue before a second caller three minutes later reported he had been struck, CHP said.

A 51-year-old man driving a 2024 Peterbilt big rig was headed north in the slowest lane while the pedestrian, who was naked, was walking in the same lane, CHP said.

The driver attempted to avoid a collision by swerving but could not avoid the fatal collision with the pedestrian, CHP said.

The man was thrown to the eastern shoulder of the highway and was pronounced dead at the scene, CHP said.

The driver pulled to the shoulder and spoke with police, CHP said. He was not suspected of being impaired.

CHP said it was not immediately clear if the pedestrian was impaired by alcohol or drugs.

The north side of Highway 99 south of Clinton Avenue had been reduced to fewer lanes than normal as of about 5 a.m., according to a social media post by Caltrans.

The agency said delays of traffic in the area were expected.
