There were plenty of standout performances in Gadsden area in high school sports for the week of May 3rd.
Here’s a few who shined the brightest this week:
Baseball
Quarterfinal round
Coosa Christian's John David Justus threw five innings with 11 strikeouts allowing one run on one hit in a 2-1 win over Appalachian.
Coosa Christian's Bryan Nelson drove in three runs in a 9-7 series-clinching win over Appalachian. He threw 4⅔ innings with five strikeouts.
Coosa Christian's Clete O'Bryant brought in three RBIs.
Sardis’ Conner Lowery pitched an eight inning gem allowing two hits while striking out nine batters in a 4-1 win over Alexandria.
Sardis's Blaze Gerhart threw six innings allowing four runs but struck out eight batters in a 4-2 loss to Alexandria.
Westbrook Christian's Dylan Rainey struck out four batters across almost six innings of work in an 8-4 win over Fayette. He added two RBIs in game one and three more in game three.
Westbrook's Brady Carden brought in two RBIs.
Westbrook's Brodie Johnson scored two RBIs in a 9-4 loss to Fayette.
Westbrook's Cam Carden hit the walkoff double that scored three RBIs, as part of a three hit day in a 9-8 win over Fayette.
Second round
Sardis Blaze Gerhart struck out 13 batters in a 5-0 win over Madison Academy.
Westbrook Christian's Braden Key had 10 strikeouts in a 2-0 win over Colbert County.
Boys soccer
Sweet 16
Guntersville’s AJ Shumate scored in a 1-0 win over Brewer. It was his 160th career goal.
Southside’s Camren Thompson scored once and added two assists in a 3-0 win over John Carroll Catholic.
Westbrook Christian’s JD Berndt scored twice in a win over Jacksonville.
Westbrook Christian's Eggo Alabasi made two assists.
Girls soccer
Sweet 16
Southside’s Hannah Maddox made 14 saves in a 2-1 win over John Carroll Catholic.
Southside’s Makayla Walker and Maddie Sprinkle both scored.
Westbrook Christian’s Anna Grace Whittemore scored five times in a 10-0 win over White Plains.
Softball
Area tournaments
Hokes Bluff's Lacey Grace Hall threw a complete game shutout striking out four batters in a 10-0 area title win over Glencoe.
Hokes Bluff's Chloe Dodds hit a two-run home run and had four RBIs.
Hokes Bluff's Sophia Jackson hit a three-run home run with five RBIs.
Piedmont’s Savannah Smith struck out nine batters in a 3-1 championship win over Weaver.
West End's Brayley King had four hits in a semifinal round win.
West End's Brayley King, Liddy Falkner and Josie Bunch all had two RBIs in a title game 11-10 win.
West End's Kennedi Nix brought home three RBIs.
