JACKSONVILLE — Jacksonville State football will be without Ron Wiggins for at least the first half of the regular season.

Wiggins will be out due to a ligament issue in one of his toes that required surgery. The surgery happened on Monday, but Rich Rodriguez did not provide an update on it during his press conference the same day.

"We lost Ronnie Wiggins for a long time, he's going to be out for at least 10 weeks. That hurts because he's a really good player," Rodriguez said before adding more on Wiggins injury. "Initially, we thought it was a turf toe, but then its some kind of ligament, surgery required, This morning, actually had surgery this morning. He can maybe get a redshirt year, come back at the end of the season. We don't know yet."

Wiggins was a vital member of the 2023 team, but entered the transfer portal in April before coming back to the Gamecocks soon after. He is a Jacksonville native, and was one of the pre-transition players left on the roster. He ran for 468 yards and six scores last year and run for a total of 1,183 yards and 12 scores in three years.

Based on the 10-week estimate, Wiggins could return around the Liberty game on Oct. 30, putting him at four games left in the regular season. He should have one more year, regardless of if he gets a redshirt year due to his COVID-19 season.

The only other injury Rodriguez mentioned was Dallan Wright, who was injured early in camp, being out for the year. Wright sparingly played in 2023 after transferring from Virginia Tech. Outside of those two, Rodriguez said that some of the younger players are banged up.
