Florida’s 2024 football season began about as disastrously as it could have in Week 1, with the Gators falling to in-state foe Miami 41-17 at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.

This weekend, they have a prime opportunity to rebound from that season-opening setback with a game against Samford.

Coach Billy Napier entered this season on one of the hottest seats in college football after going 11-14 in his first two seasons at a program with three national championships and the lofty expectations that come with that past success. He did little to quell those doubts against the Hurricanes, who outgained his Florida team by a 529-261 margin.

Late in that loss, the Gators got a glimpse at their future with five-star freshman quarterback DJ Lagway entering the game for injured starter Graham Mertz and leading Florida to a touchdown drive in the fourth quarter. On Wednesday, Lagway was revealed as the Gators’ starter against Samford.

Florida has a checkered history with Samford, which it struggled to contain in a 70-52 victory in 2021 . In that win, the Gators allowed 530 yards to the Bulldogs , who trailed by just four points with 10 minutes remaining before Florida scored two late touchdowns to seal the win. Samford went 6-5 last season and dropped its 2024 season opener last Saturday against fellow FCS program West Georgia.
