    These three athletes recognized for their talents, earn Preseason Athlete of the Year

    Over the past several weeks, The Gardner News has highlighted the best athletes of the fall season and gave readers a chance to have a say in who they think deserves the honor of Athlete of the Year.

    Polls for Preseason/Early Season Athlete of the Year were voted upon and now it is time to announce the first set of our winners.

    Winners were determined solely by results of the readers' poll ,which were taken after each poll had been up for 10 days. Here are the winners for football, girls' soccer and field hockey. Polls for the remaining sports are still live so be sure to cast your vote now!

    Football

    Michael Duddy of Monty Tech came out on top in the football preseason poll. Duddy, an offensive and defensive tackle, earned 41.66% on the poll which came out to 14,657 votes out of a total 35,184.

    In second place was Narragansett running back Kaedan McCullough , who had 38.53% and 13,556 total votes.

    Girls Soccer

    The girls soccer poll received the most votes out of all the polls, with 70,376 total. The winner is Molly Horgan from Oakmont. Horgan earned 43.52% for a count of 30,625 votes.

    Coming in second was Monty Tech's Makayla Small with 29,232 votes for 41.54%.

    Field Hockey

    Kylie George from Quabbin is the winner of the field hockey poll. She received 9,251 votes which came out to 43.5%.

    Behind George on the poll was Monty Tech's Haylee Mahoney (32.85%, 6,986). The field hockey poll received a total of 21,267 votes.
