A man was injured after driving his pickup truck through a gate and crashed it into an electrical transfer station Tuesday afternoon in Gardner.

According to officials, Gardner Police Department and Gardner Fire Department personnel were responding to an unrelated accident on Green St. near Mount Wachusett Community College at about 1:50 p.m. A pickup truck unexpectedly drove through the scene and continued at a high rate of speed, turning north on Rt. 140.

Once officers were able to safely return to their cruisers, they immediately followed in the direction the vehicle was last seen traveling. Shortly after, it was determined that the vehicle had exited Rt. 140 by turning left and breaking through a closed gate and entering property owned by National Grid.

Officers proceeded onto the dirt road and discovered that the pickup truck had crashed into the electrical transfer station, striking a pole and damaging the surrounding fencing.

The driver of the truck was trapped inside the truck and was extricated by members of the fire department. The Eaton St. entrance to the area was closed to the public by police during the incident.

The driver, who was not identified, was transported to Heywood Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.
