    Top performers: Late heroics propel South Point girls soccer to NCHSAA 3A West final

    Here is a daily list of the top performers from Cleveland, Gaston and Lincoln counties during the 13th week of spring sports action.

    Our weekly top performers list and athlete of the week nominees are compiled courtesy of information provided to The Gaston Gazette and Shelby Star by coaches, athletic directors or team statisticians through emails, MaxPreps or mentioning @JoeLHughesII in game results and highlights posted to X, formerly known as Twitter.

    Thursday, May 23

    Baseball

    Hagan Hoyle, Burns: Finished 2-for-3 in the Bulldogs' 3-1 loss to East Rutherford.

    Marshall McGowan, Burns: Was 2-for-3 with a solo home run.

    Colby Putnam, Burns: Allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits with three strikeouts.

    Softball

    Desiree Green, Kings Mountain: Was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored in the Lady Mountaineers' 3-2 win over Piedmont.

    Maddie Huffman, Kings Mountain: Pitched a complete game, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits with six strikeouts.

    Wednesday, May 22

    Girls soccer

    Isabella Goodwin, South Point: Stopped six of seven shots attempted by Hibriten in South Point's 7-6 (1-1) win in penalty kicks.

    JyiYanna Watkins, South Point: Scored a goal.

    Tuesday, May 21

    Baseball

    Hagan Hoyle, Burns: Had three hits, including a double in a 9-6 win over East Rutherford.

    Marshall McGowan, Burns: Was 2-for-3 with a double, home run, two RBIs and three runs scored. He also pitched 3 ⅔ innings, allowing no runs on two hits with four strikeouts.

    Colby Putnam, Burns: Was 2-for-4 with a grand slam and five RBIs.

    Nick Williams, Burns: Was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

    Softball

    Maddie Huffman, Kings Mountain: Allowed three runs (none earned) on six hits with 11 strikeouts in seven innings of the Lady Mountaineers' 3-1 loss to Piedmont.

    Kayla McSwain, Kings Mountain: Earned a triple and scored a run.

    Girls soccer

    Cheyenne Painter, Mountain Island Charter: Scored the only goal of her team's 1A West third round playoff game, helping the Raptors to a 1-0 win over Union Academy. MICS hosts Christ the King on Thursday.

    Monday, May 20

    Girls soccer

    Madison Dudley, South Point: Scored a goal in the Lady Raiders’ 3-2 win over Hickory to advance in the NCHSAA 3A girls soccer playoffs. No. 4 South Point takes on 3A West’s top seed Hibriten on Thursday.

    Karsyn Lowman, South Point: Scored a goal and had an assist.

    Charlotte Smith, South Point: Scored the game-winning goal with less than nine minutes remaining.
