A pair of the area’s longest losing streaks bit the dust Tuesday evening, with Highland Tech and Stuart Cramer earning their way back into the win column.

After its Week 1 matchup at Palmetto Christian Academy in South Carolina was canceled, Highland Tech snapped a 34-game losing streak in a 31-8 victory over Bonnie Cone Leadership Academy. It was the Rams’ first win since a 27-8 victory over Bessemer City during the spring 2021 campaign.

“These guys have been here for four years with zero wins. We have 510 kids in the school; obviously our schedule is hard (in Southern Piedmont 1A/2A),” said Highland Tech coach Jimmy White earlier this fall. “I wanted to reach out and play teams who were similar to us; let’s be competitive, get going and get some confidence before we start into a hard conference schedule.”

Carmelo Adams had three touchdowns, including a pair of TD passes to 6-foot-5, 220-pound tight end Carson London. Jonah Jefferies also had two TD runs.

Highland Tech’s defense was solid throughout, Bonnie Cone’s only points coming on a kickoff return in the second quarter. Robert Davis had a particularly special night, intercepting two passes.

Stuart Cramer itself ended a 13-game losing streak with a 49-0 rout of CHASE. The Storm’s last win prior to Tuesday was an Oct. 21, 2022 victory over North Gaston.

Qualteau Hawkins caught two touchdown passes from Cooper McMillan and threw another to Landon Lee, while Kaveaun Pless, Riley Hicks, Chris Childs and Zack Alexander each contributed a TD run for the Storm.

“It’s great; this group of kids, I’m so proud of the way they played (Tuesday). I knew they could play like that and have a result like that,” said Stuart Cramer coach Ben McMIllan. “I’m proud as a coach to see them go out and do that. Everybody played well across the board; offense, defense and special teams.”

Highland Tech and Stuart Cramer each look to add to their respective win tally Friday night. Highland Tech hosts Buford (South Carolina) while Stuart Cramer travels to East Gaston.
