After receiving reports from concerned residents, crews are working to fill a sinkhole on City Church Street.

A press release from the city said that at first glance, the damage appeared to be caused by a water or sewer leak underground.

Early Friday morning, a Gastonia Public Works Crew inspected the sinkhole and did not detect a leak.

The cause was determined to be a weak spot in the ground that eroded over time, a release said.

The release said crews are currently reinforcing the area, and it will be monitored for a week before repaving begins.
