    VOTE: Gastonia, Shelby nominees for Week 3 high school football players, team of the week

    Following a busy Week 3 of high school football in Cleveland, Gaston and Lincoln counties , here’s your opportunity to get in on the action.

    Vote for who you believe was tri-county football’s top offensive and defensive/special teams players, in addition to the best team from Week 1.

    Player of the week nominations are compiled courtesy of information obtained by The Gaston Gazette and Shelby Star by coaches, athletic directors or team statisticians through emails, MaxPreps, game results and highlights posted to social media. If a top performer’s name doesn’t appear on the list, encourage their coach to email submissions to jhughes@gastongazette.com or sports@gastongazette.com.

    HONOR ROLL: Gastonia, Shelby area high school football: Week 3 top performers

    FRIDAY NIGHT FINALS: North Carolina high school football Week 3 final scores in Gastonia, Shelby area

    Team of the Week nominees

    • Crest: Won two games in a matter of days, defeating Cleveland County rivals Burns and Shelby to move to 2-0.
    • East Gaston: Earned its first win of the 2024 campaign in thrilling fashion, Caleb Smith’ 23-yard field goal as time expired lifting the Warriors past Stuart Cramer, 27-24.
    • East Lincoln: The Mustangs moved to 2-0 with a 52-14 rout of rival Lincolnton.
    • Highland Tech: After 34 consecutive losses, the Rams won games in a matter of days against Bonnie Conne Leadership Academy and Buford (SC).

    Offensive Player of the Week nominees

    • Gavin Chastain, Bessemer City: Threw for 217 yards and three touchdowns in a 42-17 win over Avery County.
    • Michael Edwards, Crest: Had six receptions for 106 yards and two touchdowns in a 27-14 win over Shelby.
    • Josiah Hill, Kings Mountain: Ran for four touchdowns in a 41-20 win over Burns.
    • Grant Lawless, East Lincoln: Threw five touchdown passes in a 52-14 win over Lincolnton.

    Defense/Special Teams Player of the Week nominees

    • Eric Hatten, Bessemer City: Finished with five tackles and a 99-yard interception return for a touchdown in the Yellow Jackets’ 42-17 win over Avery County.
    • Gene Neely, Hunter Huss: H ad 11 tackles and returned an interception for a touchdown in a 56-27 loss to Providence.
    • Quamell Scott, Ashbrook: Had a sack for safety, in addition to a blocked punt, which rolled out of the end zone for another two points.
    • Caleb Smith, East Gaston : Connected on two field goals, including a 23-yard attempt to down rival Stuart Cramer, 27-25.
