Gaston County officials have opened an emergency shelter at the Citizens Resource Center at 1303 Dallas-Cherryville Hwy. to accommodate residents voluntarily evacuating their homes in Lowell and Mount Holly.

According to a press release from the county, flood warnings around the South Fork and Catawba River in Gaston County prompted voluntary evacuations in Lowell's Catawba Run and Preston Park neighborhoods and at apartments and homes near the Highland Street Bridge in Mount Holly.

"Emergency Management officials are encouraging residents to stay vigilant, keep their devices charged to monitor for severe weather conditions overnight, and heed any directives issued by the county’s Emergency Management Director," the release said.

Gaston Emergency Management and Fire Services Director Scott Hunter recommends in the release that those who are able stay home and off the roads until tomorrow morning.

He added that the heaviest winds and rain are likely to hit Gaston County between 2-8 a.m.

"Residents with non-emergency concerns or needs are urged to utilize GCOEMFS’ email or phone hotlines at GastonIncidentInfo@GastonGov.com or 704-862-6281 and reserve 911 for true life-threatening emergencies," the release said.
