Michigan deputy uninjured after firework bounces off chest, explodes ‘seconds later’
INGHAM COUNTY, MI - An Ingham County Sheriff’s Office Deputy was not injured early July 3 after being struck by a firework. Shortly after midnight, deputies responded to a report of young people shooting off fireworks in a backyard on the 5000 block of Hemlock Drive in Delhi Township, the sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post. When police arrived, they saw what appeared to be a party.
As prisons face ‘dire’ staffing need, union asks for Michigan National Guard help
A union that represents Michigan Department of Corrections officers says they are in “dire need” of state support as they deal with ongoing staffing shortages. Michigan Corrections Organization President Byron Osborn asked Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in a letter Wednesday, July 3 to deploy the Michigan National Guard to bolster staff at prisons. Osborn wrote that corrections officers are being forced to work “mandatory 16-hour overtime shifts” in order to keep prisons staffed.
