MURFREESBORO — For the third time since 2014, the Greeneville boys track and field team is bringing home a state championship.

On Tuesday, the Greene Devils scored 70 points to finish first in the Class 2A meet at Middle Tennessee State University’s Dean Hayes Stadium in Murfreesboro.

Greeneville won its first state title in 2014 and its second in 2022.

“It feels great, this one is special,” Greeneville coach Larry Blalock said. “We came into the year seeded 16th at state. As late as three weeks ago, we were hoping just to be top five, and to come in and dominate in state like we did tonight, it makes it real special. And the best thing about this is that we only lose one kid to graduation. They’ll all be back.”

Zaydyn Anderson was the highlight of the team, earning two gold medals. He took first in long jump with a 22-3.25 and took first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.88.

“It feels good,” he said on being a state champion. “I came in and had a good last jump (in long jump). And I just got it.”

Anderson also earned two silver medals. One in triple jump with a 43-9.5 and the other in the 100 meters with an 11.07.

“Zaydyn definitely had a great day,” Blalock said. “And he had to have (had a great day) if we were going to (win). Of course, this is the most kids that I’ve ever brought to state. That makes it real special, too. Program is growing.”

Darien Humphries finished sixth in triple jump with a 41-11 and was sixth in 110 hurdles with a 17.14.

Jacob Moore took second in pole vault, clearing 13-0, and Jacey Goodwin took fifth in high jump, clearing 5-0.

Trey Bailey was fifth in the 1600 with a 4:38.64 and Isaac Gibson was fifth in the 800 with a 2:00.31.

The boys 4x100 relay team of Cole Franklin, Taren Claridy, Thomas Lollar and Darien Humphries took second with a 42.93. The boys 4x800 relay team of Bailey, Grant Tunnel, Chase Jablonski and Gibson took fifth with an 8:28.69. And the girls 4x800 relay team of Riley Castro, Tris Douthat, Reese Williams and Susan Mulhollen took fifth with a 10:34.44.

“This is probably, across all the events, the most diverse team we’ve ever had,” Blalock said. “In the past, we’ve had a couple of distance runners, maybe one jumper, a thrower. A couple years ago, we had four sprinters and one distance runner. This team had sprinters, distance runners, jumpers, pole vaulters, everything was here. (This season) has been frustrating at times, but when it ends on this note, it’s worth it.”

The girls finished with seven points, taking 29th place. Signal Mountain won the girls meet.

    South Greene

The South Greene girls finished 10th in the Class A state meet with 23 points, while the boys were 17th with 14 points.

East Nashville Magnet School won the girls championship and Memphis East won the boys championship.

Nolan Weems finished third in pole vault, clearing 11-0, and Alexa Gabbard took eighth in high jump, clearing 4-6.

Ava Clark finished sixth in 100 hurdles with a 17.18 and Natalie Freise took seventh in 300 hurdles with a 51.88.

The girls 4x200 relay team of Mackenzie Niston, Clark, Gabbard and Abby Hoxie finished eighth with a 1:52.86. The girls 4x400 relay team of Hoxie, Freise, Foshie and Emma Cutshall was eighth with a 4:37.75. And the girls 4x800 relay team of Samantha Birdwell, Cutshall, Clark and Freise was eighth with a 4:37.75.

Isaiah Treadway took seventh in long jump with a 19-8.25 and Brasen Murvin took seventh in discus with a 105-8.

    West Greene
