RUTLEDGE — Chuckey-Doak had a hard time containing Grainger’s rushing attack as the Black Knights dropped a 42-21 decision to the Grizzlies Friday night at The Den.

The Grizzlies amassed 390 rushing yards and added 91 through the air as they improved to 2-0 on the season. Chuckey-Doak used a good mixture of pass and run as they ran for 140 yards and threw for 144. Hayden Roper carried the load for Chuckey-Doak as he rushed for 140 yards on 11 carries. Dominique Atchison went 7-for-15 for 144 yards. Brayden Greene was everywhere on the field on defense as he led all tacklers with 10 stops.

“There were just mistakes across the board,” C-D head coach Billy Kaylor said after the game. “We put the ball on the ground a couple of times , we moved the ball well offensively at times, but we just couldn’t seem to get out of our own way on both sides of the ball. We just didn’t put it all together tonight. Kids played really hard and I’m proud of how hard they played against a very big, very physical Grainger team. We just came up on the short end of it tonight.”

After Taylor hit Jackson Richey for a 20-yard touchdown but the extra point missed to put Grainger up 6-0, the Black Knights had their biggest play of the night when Skylar Davis took the ensuing kickoff 85 yards to the house and Billy Hahnlan kicked the extra point to make it 7-6. “He’s a special player,” Kaylor said of Davis’ big play. “We talked in the pre-season how he is just a freshman and he made some good plays on defense and he is going to be a really, really good player as he continues to develop.”

The home team went up 14-7 when Colton Parrott scored from the one and Dawson Fowler had the two-point conversion. Chuckey Doak took the next drive down the field and looked to be in good position for a score as they drove all the way to the seven yard line but a costly fumble ended the drive. The Grizzlies took advantage of the turnover as they pieced together a long drive and capped it with an eight-yard TD run by Aiden Dalton. Another disastrous fumble thwarted a drive in the second quarter and once again, Grainger took advantage. Dawson Fowler ran in from the four-yard line with 22 seconds to go before the half. Dalton was true again on the two-point run to make it 28-7.

Grainger continued to produce in the third quarter as Brizen Solomon had a 29-yard touchdown reception from Parrott and Taylor scored on a keeper from the one to put the Grizzlies up 42-7 after the extra points. The Black Knights kept fighting though and scored a pair of touchdowns in the final frame. Atchison uncorked a bomb to Dominic Hahnlan for a 57-yard score and Atchison called his own number on the keeper from the four. Billy Hahnlan was good on the point after on both touchdowns to produce the 42-21 final. “They played hard and we don’t have to coach that in them,” Kaylor said of the grit his team showed in the final frame. “They want to play hard and that is something as a coach you love.”

Chuckey-Doak will face in-county rival West Greene next week.
