SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Guilherme Fontes scored on a penalty kick with 10:28 remaining to give Converse University a 1-0 victory over Tusculum University in non-conference men’s soccer on Wednesday night.

The Valkyries (5-1-1) and Pioneers (0-4-1) seemed headed toward a scoreless deadlock when Converse was awarded the penalty for a foul in the box in the 80th minute. Fontes scored his sixth goal and second on a penalty kick to give Converse the victory.

Tusculum keeper Noe Delmotte had five saves as the Valkyries outshot the Pioneers 10-8. Converse had a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks, while the Pioneers were called for 18 fouls to nine for the Valkyries.

    Matches Moved

Due to the amount of rainfall received over the past three days, Tusculum has moved the date and location of Saturday’s scheduled South Atlantic Conference men’s and women’s soccer doubleheader with Anderson University.

The teams will now play Sunday at David Crockett High School in Jonesborough with the women’s match kicking off at 2 p.m. followed by the men’s match at 4:30 p.m.

The Anderson women are 4-2-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the SAC, while the Pioneers are 2-5-0 and 0-2-0. The Anderson men are 3-1-1 and a 2-0-0, while the Pioneers at 0-4-1 and 0-1-1.
