Rebels Look To Topple Unbeaten Happy Valley

With first place in Region 1-2A on the line, the South Greene Rebels football team will travel to Happy Valley on Friday night.

South Greene enters the game 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the region, while Happy Valley is 4-0, 2-0.

South Greene is coming off an 18-17 non-region win in the final minutes at Seymour.

In that game, South Greene finished with 277 yards of offense with quarterback Jacob Susong completing 14 of 18 passes for 206 yards.

The Rebels trailed 17-7 with 9:12 to play. Brant Wilhoit made a 32-yard field goal with six minutes left and Susong scored on a keeper from 4 yards out with just over two minutes to play.

The Rebels opted to go for two and the win and the gutsy call paid off as Nash Rader took a pitch before throwing it to a wide open Trey Gentry in the end zone for the 18-17 final.

South Greene’s defense did the rest to secure the win.

The Rebels will need those types of gutsy play calls if they are to beat Happy Valley, which is coming off a 46-6 win over Hancock County.

Happy Valley defeated South Greene 26-20 in overtime last season at South Greene.

In that game, South Greene’s outperformed Happy Valley offensively, 262 yards to 206. The Rebels, though, were unable to contain Warriors running back Joseph Sowards, who scored all of Happy Valley’s TDs.

Rader led South Greene in rushing with 106 yards on 20 carries, and Susong completed 11 of 21 passes for 150 yards and two TDs.

    Hampton At West Greene

The Buffaloes improved to 3-3 on the season, 1-1 in the region, after a pair of Buffaloes made the record books last week in the team’s 40-0 win over Cumberland Gap.

Austin Franklin finished with 467 total yards, 314 on five receptions, which is tied for eighth most receiving yards in a single game in Tennessee state history. He also scored six TDs — four receiving and two rushing — which ties him for fourth in state history for most in a single game.

Quarterback Austin Brown set school records for passing yards and passing TDs in a game. He completed six of 12 passes for 324 yards and four TDs with one interception.

The Buffaloes now look to continue to perform at a high level this week when they host the 1-4 Hampton Bulldogs.

Hampton hasn’t played since Sept. 20, but that was a 60-14 win over Cumberland Gap. The Bulldogs got off to a hot start, leading 38-0 after just the first quarter.

Last year, the Buffs had six fumbles lost in a rainy 52-6 loss to Hampton. West Greene’s offense struggled mightily in the contest, only having 7 rushing yards and 32 passing yards.

    Greeneville At Grainger

The Greeneville Greene Devils travels to Grainger at 7:30 p.m. Thursday for a Region 1-4A game.

The Greene Devils are 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the region, while Grainger is 3-4, 1-3.

Greeneville defeated Grainger 74-7 last season in Greeneville.

The Greene Devils rolled up 445 yards offense en route to a 73-8 region win over the Sullivan East Patriots on Friday.

Of Greeneville’s 445 yards, 342 came in the first half as the Greene Devils raced to a 59-0 lead at halftime.

Senior running back Carson Quillen ran for 189 yards and four touchdowns on seven carries, all in the first half.

    Quillen’s TD runs were 43, 39, 51 and 15 yards.

Junior quarterback Caden Baugh completed all four passes he attempted for 100 yards and three TDs.

Baugh hooked up with junior Zaydyn Anderson for a 50-yard TD pass for Greeneville’s first score and then hit senior Jeriah Griffin with a 25-yard TD pass for Greeneville’s second score.

Baugh also hit Anderson with a 15-yard TD pass.

Greeneville held Sullivan East to negative-28 yards rushing.

Grainger is coming off a 41-0 home loss to Cherokee, a team Greeneville defeated 46-0 on the road on Sept. 6.

    Chuckey-Doak At Johnson County

The Black Knights dropped to 1-5 on the season, 0-2 in the region, after a 39-13 region loss to Claiborne last week.

Chuckey-Doak running back Gage Hill, who returned from missing the last several weeks due to injury, scored the Knights’ first touchdown in the third quarter on a 1-yard carry and freshman quarterback Kipton Ball connected with Dominic Hahnlen for a 52-yard TD pass in the fourth.

The Knights face a tough task in their next game, taking on the undefeated region foe Johnson County, fresh off a 29-15 win over Pigeon Forge.

Against Pigeon Forge, the Longhorns’ Jace Stout threw for 146 yards and a touchdown and scored once with his legs in the win. Juan Mejia added 82 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

However, the defense may be the toughest the Knights have faced all year. The Longhorns are only allowing an average of 13 points per game.

That seems to carry over from last season, as the last time Chuckey-Doak and Johnson County went head-to-head, the Longhorns won a defensive slugfest, 12-3, intercepting Knights’ quarterback Nick Palazzo three times and holding the offense to just 155 total yards.
