Ex-No. 1 pick JaMarcus Russell fired, accused of theft
JaMarcus Russell, the first pick of the 2007 NFL Draft, has been fired from his volunteer high school assistant coaching job and accused in a lawsuit of stealing donations meant for the school, according to multiple reports. The firing apparently came several months ago but was just confirmed by school officials in Mobile County, Ala. "JaMarcus Russell was relieved of his volunteer coaching duties at Williamson High School during the fall of last year," Mobile County Public Schools said in a statement tod WKRG Sports on Friday. Dick Vitale announces new cancer diagnosis
Longtime ESPN college basketball broadcaster Dick Vitale faces a fourth cancer diagnosis since 2021, he said Friday, and will have neck surgery on Tuesday. "My report on the Biopsy of the Lymph Node in my neck has arrived & it is cancerous," the 85-year-old Vitale announced Friday afternoon on X while thanking his family and friends for their support. After dealing with melanoma and lymphoma in 2021, Vitale announced he was cancer-free in 2022. Last year, however, he underwent radiation treatment for vocal cord cancer, which postponed his return to ESPN. He has called games for the network since its founding in 1979, and was on its first college basketball broadcast, a win by DePaul over Wisconsin. --Field Level Media

Cincinnati All-American Dontay Corleone out indefinitely with blood clots
Cincinnati All-American defensive tackle Dontay Corleone is out indefinitely after being admitted to the hospital earlier this month because of blood clots in his lungs. The Bearcats begin fall camp in less than five weeks, but Corleone's status is up in the air for August and beyond. Texas lands K-State transfer forward Arthur Kaluma
Former Kansas State forward Arthur Kaluma announced Thursday that he is transferring to Texas. "Hook ‘em," Kaluma wrote on Instagram along with a picture of himself in Texas gear, tipping a cowboy hat over his eyes. Kaluma transferred to Kansas State last year after two seasons at Creighton and posted career highs of 14.4 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game in 33 games (32 starts). In three seasons of college basketball, Kaluma has put up 12.2 points, 6.1 boards and 1.7 assists per game across 101 appearances (39 starts).
