Greenville native earns prestigious career certification

Georgiana resident Brandi Mosley, chief school finance officer (CSFO) at Pike County Board of Education, recently earned the prestigious Certified Administrator of School Finance and Operations (SFO) certification, an achievement recently announced by The Association of School Business Officials International (ASBO).

Originally from Greenville, Mosley currently resides in Georgiana and has demonstrated her expertise in managing school district finances effectively, having served as the CSFO for the Butler County School System from 2010 through 2022.

“I decided to just go for it and take the test… and I passed,” Mosley said. “I surprised myself but I feel the fact that I’ve been doing this job for 15 years helped me tremendously. There’s nothing like hands-on experience.”

The SFO certification is a standardized assessment for school business officials, highlighting their knowledge, expertise, and fiscal credibility.

“SFOs are keenly sought after due to their experience and expertise in appropriately allocating resources to meet their constituents’ current and future needs,” said James Rowan, executive director of ASBO International.

To earn the SFO designation, professionals must fulfill several requirements, including demonstrating eligibility through work experience and education, passing a comprehensive exam, and adhering to ASBO International’s Certification Code of Conduct. Recertification is required every three years, ensuring ongoing professional development.

Even after completing an in-depth training course, Mosley said she would encourage aspiring SFO’s to gain a few years of experience before pursuing certification and emphasized that her hands-on experience was invaluable in preparing for the exam.

Mosley noted that the certification’s international recognition benefits professionals even if they choose to move outside of Alabama.

“This certification gives them more merit and will make them stand out amongst others when applying for a job with a school system.”

Mosley expressed gratitude for her job and mentors, recognizing the role they played in her success.

“I’m very thankful God blessed me with a wonderful job and several mentors along the way,” Mosley said.
