Defining “impact” can make journalism better
PERUGIA, ITALY – There are few moments in a journalist’s career as meaningful as hearing that their story had a positive impact on readers and prompted change. But most reporters and newsrooms lack the tools to accurately measure impact and understand how an impactful story can be replicated. Clicks and views can show the reach of a story, but how can we consistently tell if, and how, we are effecting change in the community?

Rebuilding the pipeline for local news
With local news in a free fall, it is more important than ever to inspire a new generation of journalists to cover their local communities. We work toward this goal every day with emerging journalists through our Report for America program, but the urgency of this moment means we need to widen the circle and also enlist college and even high school journalists to play a role in serving their local communities as reporters.
A lens on the meaning of People’s Park
Covering controversial issues as a journalist often means that your subjects are going to pressure you to see things the way they do. Regular people are savvier than ever at trying to convince journalists to represent their personal interests, or those of their employer, making it challenging to present a balanced analysis of the facts. And often, the more dispassionate and neutral the journalist’s analysis, the less compelling their finished piece becomes.
Can religion play a role in finding a way back to the path toward peace in the Middle East?
Ancient Roman paving stones inside Jerusalem’s Old City that have been worn smooth over time mark the path where tradition holds that Jesus carried the cross. It is called the Way of Sorrow, or the “Via Dolorosa.”. Today along that path, a procession of Christians, including Palestinians who...
Diane Foley shares her story of grace and forgiveness in her book, “American Mother”
As we head into Spring, the three Abrahamic faiths are all preparing to celebrate their festivals of sacrifice and renewal. Muslims are marking the holy month of Ramadan, which began this week; Christians are in the season of lent before they observe Easter on Sunday, March 31; and Jews are preparing to celebrate Passover during the last week of April.
Measuring this historic moment: Is it a 1968, Redux?
America is sleepwalking into a political collision that is now all but inevitable: an electoral rematch of Joe Biden v. Donald Trump. With the results of the presidential primary’s Super Tuesday now in, the national election is fully on. Trump offered a rambling list of grievances in a victory speech Tuesday night as he all but clinched the Republican nomination. Despite his big win and sweeping mandate in the Republican Party, Trump offered a dark vision of America as a “third world country” when it comes to its borders and its elections.
Refocusing the perception of a community through photography
The question of how to engage audiences with news, especially local news, looms large in journalist’s minds these days. Great photography is a start, but it’s not enough to show technically adept, graphically compelling images. People latch onto stories, and for a photographer to craft a story, they have to understand who or what they’re photographing.
In an industry in decline, young journalists offer hope and reflection
Last year was a terrible year for layoffs in American journalism with 2,681 jobs in news lost, more than both of the two previous years combined. But it is hard not to think of this first quarter of 2024 as harbinger of yet another year of record decline, with one news organization after the next – from the venerable Los Angeles Times to the digital darling known as The Messenger – announcing layoffs or closures.

While the stakes are high in this election, America...
A community’s story through the eyes of their residents
In photography as in life, a person’s eyes are intensely communicative. Photographers look for eyes, expressive faces, how people place their hands, and how people use body language to form the structure of a good picture. Photojournalists and their editors often won’t consider running images where the subject is...

2024: Big challenges, and lots of hope from our corps
There are few things more centering than a fresh reporter’s notebook. As I write my name and the 1/1/2024 date on the cover of a new notebook, I wonder where this new year will take us. It will almost certainly be a fateful year ahead in global politics with the American presidential primary season about to get underway and deeply divisive elections looming not just here but in many other corners of the world, notably in India and Indonesia, to name just two of the 60 national elections unfolding this year.
