MARBLE FALLS – The Wimberley boys soccer season ended on Tuesday, March 26 with 7-1 loss to Marble Falls in a Bi-District playoff game. Marble Falls, 21-2-1 (10-0) took a 1-0 lead in the first three minutes of the game and quickly extended the lead 2-0 before Wimberley senior Gage Weaver scored to cut the lead to 2-1 with 33:00 minutes in the first half. Weaver skillfully moved the ball along the sideline, outpacing a defender, past the Mustangs’ bench, taking his successful shot about twenty yards from the net. The Texans 9-11-1 (6-4 in District 26) were constantly on defense and exhausted by halftime, when the Mustangs held a 5-1 lead. “We gave it everything we’ve got,” Weaver said after the game, “but sometimes it’s just not enough.” Marble Falls continued to dominate offensively, taking dozens of shots on goal as Wimberley goal keeper Ian Craig defended the net, while the Mustangs’ defense scarcely allowed the Texans within twenty yards of the goal the remainder of the game. Weaver’s goal would be the only goal the Mustangs would surrender. “It was tough for us to get any kind of possession, but this team kept on fighting and fighting and I couldn’t be prouder of you all,” Wimberley coach Tony Castaneda told his team after the game. Marble Falls, the District 25 winner, will meet Boerne 19-0 (10-0) the District 26 winner, in a Regional Quarterfinal on Monday, April 1. As for the Wimberley Lady Texans soccer team, following a 3-2 win over Gateway College Prep School in the Bi-District round of the playoffs, the team trounced Pleasanton 5-0 in the Area round on Thursday, March 28. The win earns Wimberley another shot at District 26 rival Boerne. In the regular season, the Lady Texans tied the Greyhounds 2-2 in February and most recently lost 2-0 on March 19, when sophomore Lilli Sandoval said after the game, “We know what we have to do in the playoffs and can look forward to meeting them again.” At press time on Tuesday, April 2, the two will meet in the 4A Region IV Quarterfinals at Smithson Valley High School. The winner will face Corpus Christi London or Beeville’s Jones High School in the Regional Semifinals, likely to be played on April 5 at a place and time to be determined. Follow all the action at
