Rock Hill High senior volleyball player Pippin Joldersma is having a terrific senior season.

She leads the Bearcats in blocks (24) and is second on the team in kills (66). Against Clover on Sept. 3, Joldersma had one of her best games of the season: 12 kills, two blocks and two digs.

But everything this season hasn’t been great.

Joldersma’s mother, Candy, was recently diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer that has already begun to spread.

At 6:30 p.m. Thursday, when Rock Hill hosts Catawba Ridge, Joldersma’s team and school will have a “Blue Out event for colon cancer” in honor of Candy Joldersma.

Kathy Sambuco, whose daughter Anna-kate plays on the Rock Hill team, told The Herald that the goal of the fundraiser is to help build a “beautiful patio space (for Candy Joldersma) so we can enjoy peace and closeness with her family.”

Sambuco said everyone around the team has named this patio “Candy’s Garden.”

Sambuco said Pippin Joldersma plays travel ball with several of the players from Catawba Ridge, so this game just seemed like the perfect one to organize the event.

“We just want to bring some joy to this wonderful family,” Sambuco said.
