Spots in York County are reporting discolored water. Rock Hill says it’s from Helene

Despite reports of discolored water in York County, the city that draws it says it’s safe to drink.

Rock Hill’s city and utility social media pages posted statements Monday about discolored water. It’s been reported inside and outside the city, according to the posts.

The city draws water from Lake Wylie and distributes it wholesale to Fort Mill, Tega Cay, York County, the Catawba Nation and other users.

“There is no drinking water quality issue, with water meeting all regulatory requirements,” Rock Hill said in its posts Monday. “Conditions in Lake Wylie can affect the source water, which has been impacted by effects from Hurricane Helene. Water is continuously monitored both in Lake Wylie and at the water filter plant to identify potential impacts and properly treat drinking water.”

Fort Mill issued a similar statement , noting the town has received reports of discolored water. The town also cites rain from Helene as the cause, and said customers should wait to wash white or light-colored clothes until the discoloration dissipates.

A change in water’s taste, color or smell could indicate water quality problems but doesn’t necessarily signal a health concern, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention . The federal agency encourages customers to check with their utility provider, which is required to notify the public if water quality doesn’t meet health standards.
