    Here are the nominees for The Herald’s high school athlete of the week.

    The poll will close Friday at noon.

    This week’s nominees

    Shay Brunmeier, Clover swimming: The Blue Eagles’ senior was runner-up in both 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly at the Region III 5A championships at Rock Hill Aquatic Center on Oct. 5.

    Brunmeier also helped both the Clover 200 and 400 freestyle relays to regional runner-up finishes at the same meet.

    Lila Hadley, Fort Mill swimming: The Yellow Jackets’ sophomore won Region III 5A titles in both the 100 breaststroke and 400 free relay at Rock Hill Aquatic Center on Oct. 5.

    Hadley, an all-region performer, also finished as runner-up in the 200 individual medley and 200 free relay at the same meet.

    Hadley’s efforts also helped the Fort Mill girls’ swimming to a Region III 5A title the same day.

    Irie Morton, Northwestern tennis: The Trojans’ sophomore won the lone match 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5 singles as Northwestern lost to Catawba Ridge, 5-1, on Oct. 3.

    Morton also won her No. 5 singles’ match, 6-4, 4-6, 12-10, in a 4-2 loss at Clover on Oct. 3.

    Northwestern is 2-9 overall this season.

    Sequel Patterson, Indian Land football: The 6-foot, 175-pound sophomore made an impact at several positions to help Indian Land to a 36-28 victory at Nation Ford on Oct. 4.

    Patterson had eight rushes for 50 yards and a touchdown, caught five passes for 125 yards and three more scores, while going 1-for-4 passing for 21 yards.

    Patterson also two returns for 32 yards and two interceptions for the Indian Land (4-2) defense in the same game.

    Anya Pershin, Legion Collegiate volleyball: The Lancers’ senior libero had 21 digs, 10 aces and eight assists as Legion Collegiate went a perfect 7-0 to win the Hilton Head Island Bash Tournament on Oct. 4-5.

    Pershin efforts helped Legion Collegiate to victories over Hilton Head Island, Hilton Head Prep, Hilton Head Christian Academy, Whale Branch, Bluffton, Philip Simmons and Jonesboro in the tournament.

    Legion Collegiate (29-4-3) has won 12 straight matches this season.

    Matthew Settle, Catawba Ridge volleyball: The Copperheads’ junior middle blocker had 17 kills and six blocks in two games as Catawba Ridge beat Northwestern (3-0, Oct. 1) and Blythewood (3-1, Oct. 3) this week.

    Catawba Ridge is 12-6 overall this season.

    Ava Shook, York cross-country: The Cougars’ junior ran a personal-best 19:34.41 to finish in the girls’ 5K at the Wendys’ Invitational at McAlpine Creek Park in Charlotte.

    Shook’s run helped the York girls’ cross country team to an 18th-place finish at the same meet.

    Kaiden Watkins, Rock Hill football: The 5-10, 180-pound sophomore athlete was all over the field as a running back, wide receiver, defensive back and kick returner to help Rock Hill to a 28-23 win at Fort Mill on Oct. 4.

    Watkins has five rushes for 60 yards and four catches for 23 yards, while making three tackles and having an interception in the victory.

    Watkins also had a 99-yard kickoff return in the same game for Rock Hill (4-3).

    Denis Weng, Northwestern swimming: The Trojans’ senior had a meet to remember swimming the 50 butterfly in the 200 medley relay for the first time at the Region III, 5A championships at Rock Hill Aquatic Center on Oct. 5.

    Weng also finished 56th place in the 50 freestyle (39.30) and 46th place in the 100 free (1:31.97) at the same meet.

    Skylar White, Catawba Ridge tennis: The Copperheads’ junior won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles to help Catawba Ridge to a 5-1 win at Northwestern on Oct. 1.

    The next day, White won 3-6, 6-1, 10-6 at No. 3 singles in a 4-3 loss to Nation Ford.

    White is 5-2 in region singles’ play for Catawba Ridge (3-4) this season.
