Key dates to know for Washington County Public Schools, first day and much more

Students return to Washington County Public Schools on Monday, Aug. 26, to start the new school year.

After a week of school, students and staff will have off the next Monday, Sept. 2, for Labor Day.

There are several notable dates on the 2024-2025 school calendar, available at the school system's website .

WCPS's Calendar Committee will be working this fall on calendars for the 2025-2026 and 2026-2027 school years, school system spokesperson Erin Anderson said.

Notable dates for the WCPS 2024-2025 school year

The Showcase of Bands is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 8, at South Hagerstown High's School Stadium.

This year's North-South football game will be Nov. 1 at South at 6 p.m. Other rivalry matches that day include Boonsboro at Smithsburg and Hancock at Clear Spring.

Among the weekdays students will have the day off is Tuesday, Nov. 5, for the general election. Some polling places are based in schools. That date is a professional learning day for teachers.

There are once again seven 2-hour early dismissal days in the school calendar. Four are on Fridays: Oct. 11, Dec. 6, Feb. 7 and March 7. The remaining three are on Mondays: Sept. 23, April 28 and May 19.

Students get three weekdays off around Thanksgiving, while teachers get two because the Wednesday before the holiday is a professional learning day.

Winter break is Dec. 21 through Jan. 1.

Spring break is a four-day weekend from April 18-21. That is Easter weekend.

Graduation ceremony dates were still being finalized, Anderson said.

The last day of school could be Monday, June 2, unless there is inclement weather. The school system actually builds six inclement weather days into the schedule, marking Tuesday, June 10, as the last day of school based on that assumption.

School will be dismissed 2 1/2 hours on the last day for students.
